How Do I Enable IdentD?

I've already tried:

Ident Service Installer (Doesn't work at all)

IdentD 2.0 (installs, but can't activate)

IdentD 2.5.1 (installs, but can't activate)

In OS 9, this simply worked by degault. In OS X, unless is a Unix expert, it simply does NOT work.

If someone knows how to do this in Terminal, please give VERY SPECIFIC commands that can be copied and pasted.

Thanks in advance!

There have now been over 500 viewings of this topic.

I viewed it maybe a dozen times, but was put off a bit with your manner, perhaps you're just frustrated, but it seems you didn't even answer an important question for the offer of help by olaj.

This is just further proof that it IS a Mac OS X problem.

I think this is proof that it ISN'T an OSX problem, worked 1st time for me on 10.4.11, even through Internet Sharing! 🙂

Since I was in a Mac help IRC channel, there were very few with identd enabled. Here are some of the exact results:

VERSION irssi v0.8.10 - running on Linux i686
VERSION BitchX-1.1-final+ by panasync - Linux 2.6.9-1.667smp
VERSION mIRC v6.35 Khaled Mardam-Bey
VERSION mIRC v6.30 Khaled Mardam-Bey

I did not find a single user running irssi on OS X, probably because few do, and if they did, they too would probably NOT have identd enabled.

Your experience is similar to mine: The identd enablers worked for a while, but SOMETHING disabled them at some point. Many think it was a software update.

Your curiosity and interest is appreciated.

I tried every one of olaj's suggestions, AND posted the results. For eg:

tcp4 0 0 *.1220 . LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.49156 . LISTEN

I followed his suggestion to test which ports were being blocked by my ISP, and posted those results: as well:

these are the ports that are blocked:

133, 136-139, 445 & 593.

olaj never confirmed that he WAS able to enable identd.

I'm not familiar with the IRC client you are using, and can't see where it shows that you have identd enabled.

If you know that you DO have it enabled, please inform us all how you accomplished it. Thanks!
