JVC GY-HM100u on FCE

So, I have final cut pro on my home computer, and FCE on my laptop. I need to edit my footage from the JVC on my laptop, but FCE doesn't recognize the files.

Is it possible to copy the Apple Intermediate Codec from Final Cut Pro, to FCE and have it work? If so, in which folder do I place it in FCE?

Thanks so much!

I'm not sure where you saw that the QT pro player can convert this media. The QuickTime pro player does not add additional codecs. If the codec is not available to start you need software that add it to your computer. Final Cut Studio comes with a great many more codecs including the native HDV QuickTime format this camera shoots in.

"After learning a great deal on this form, The JVC HM100U camcorder I believe is intended for specific Pro editing software to be used. I was lucky to have it work in FCE because I also use Logic Pro 8. I tried to edit or just review the files in a Windows base PC with no success. I have not tried all the add-on or patches, but now I feel this would require a lot of work for the average consumer. If you intend to use the JVC HM100U, I would advice to inquire first if your editing software can work with the MPEG-2 Long GOP format if you are not using FCP. I do not work much with Windows video software, so maybe I wrong on this."

I remember posting this and I have now upgraded to Final Cut Pro 6 just before the version 7 came out, lossy timing (Studio 3 is $200 cheaper). I have used the JVC GY-HM100u in FCE for months, but that is because I also have Logic 8 Pro installed and that places the AppleHDVcodec in Quicktime and that allows the JVC GY-HM100 SDHC files to be played in FCE or Quicktime. In FCE, it seems that it converts the HDVcodec to the Apple intermediate codec for editing in the timeline, this is not necessary if you have FCP since it has all the tools to edit in the native format for this camera. Except for the zoom control, 1/4" CCD and manual controls, this camera takes great movies and editing directly from SDHC into FCP is absolutely great! I don't think I can ever go back to a tape base camera again. If you don't want to spend $1000 on Final Cut Studio and you also do music, then Logic Pro $500 might solve your problem. I would recommend getting FCP because staying in the HDVCodec is probably worth the price if you are using pro video equipment, but I must admit that FCE is a very good program for all uses, pro or non-pro!

Tom, thanks for your tips. I just now realized that its your book that I'm using to try and learn FCE.

I'm still having a devil of a time combining clips from other sources without FCE having to spend hours rendering and re-rending, but I'm learning gradually. With video editing it seems like you have to confront every problem at least once, otherwise you'll never learn. Sort of like in life.

Greetings from Munich, David
