Wondering if any other users are having this problem? I'm noticing small pops & clicks in my recordings w/ logic 8. Esp. when I first turn the unit on, 30 sec. to 5 min. later it lets out a loud POP, but then the pops are minor but still there. I contacted apogee & they told me to run my glyph drive behind my ensemble via firewire. The problem still persists. I unchained it from my digi003 & it still does it as well. I don't believe it's a clocking issue either. Anyone share this problem?
Nick
Macbook pro 2.2 Ghz,
Mac OS X (10.5.7),
2g ram, glyph fw drive, logic 8, pro tools 8, apogee ensemble, digi003r
Yeah, same problem...only when I turn the unit on, like u said about 3-5 seconds afterward and loud pops...that's it though, don't hear anything after that. I will say the Ensemble is an honry little bugger....
I have never had much luck chaining devices in the past, pops, clicks etc. Lots of other folks have... Anyhow, look into getting an expresscard 34 maybe, you could put the ensemble on its own firewire bus.
How many things are you chaining together?
Do you have all the latest firmware updates for the ensemble?
My ensemble had a lot of trouble until I did the firmware update. I bought it way after all the latest updates, so I assumed it had the most recent updates from the factory, it did not. In fact, I bought mine new in February of 2009 and it shipped with December 2007 drivers disc... latest release was May 2008 I think. Check all that stuff. I have had the best luck powering on the ensemble and then firing up my mac, do you leave the ensemble on all the time?
I was chaining the Ensemble, then Digi, then the glyph drive. I was told by apogee to do this since you aren't supposed to run a fw800 drive along with the ensemble into both ports of the macbook pro (I never had a problem with this configuration when running pro tools and the digi003) I've eliminated the digi out of the chain to try to pin-point what the problem is.
I have the latest firmware I believe, this is what "About Maestro" says:
maestro 1.7
driver v2.4.6fc4
firmware v1.9.24
Also, I do my start-up with the macbook, then ensemble, then the glyph. Maybe I'll try the ensemble first. Also, good idea about the expresscard. I would like to get this resolved and get back to concentrating on making music 🙂
My firmware says v1.9.24 also
Driver says v2.4.4fc1 not sure what the difference is on that one
Maestro was acting up the other day, so I went to the website and used the uninstaller/reinstalled and it has been solid ever since.
Your MBP has a FW 400 and 800 port?
I used to run my powerbook 1.67 like this: interface in the 400 port/HD in the 800 port. I did try the chaining debacle, but it always seemed to work better direct despite the same bus scenario which shouldn't matter. I could have 20+ tracks in Logic7 running with no problems. I then added a PCMCIA card for a separate FW bus and had even better results.
That seems like a lot of things for one bus regardless. I would get the firewire express card since you already have a external hard drive. You could also look at a SATA ExpressCard/34 controller for your MacBook Pro.
Yeah, mine's the previous generation. It has a fw400 & 800 side by side. I have no problem with track count with this setup either.
New problem: I've been trying to run the ensemble first now before starting up the computer, and twice I've had problems. Once, where the computer never recognized it & the indicator light never turned blue, and the other was tonight when I turned it on and it just kept blinking red on all the meters & wouldn't stop until I turned it off and back on again. Does this ever happen to you?
Yes, I had a similar problem, for me it seemed to be a problem with maestro. Try a uninstall/reinstall, may not be it but it's worth a shot.
Try going back to powering it on after you power up your mac if that seems to work better for you... check your I/O buffer size setting in Logic after you get the Ensemble to sync. If I remember correctly, Apogee suggests a setting of 128 or higher.
I also remember having to do this awhile back:
Flashing Blue Status LED
Q: The Status LED is flashing blue indicating that the Ensemble is not locked to the selected clock source.
A: Go to the Settings tab of the Maestro Control page and verify that Clock Source Select is set properly. If it is set correctly and the Status LED is still flashing blue, then change Clock Source Select to any other setting and wait 15 seconds. Now change Clock Source Select back to your desired setting. The Status LED should now be solid blue.
