Terence,
Let me attempt to summarize this situation to see if we can wrap up this posting before it sets a new record for length. (Please excuse my belaboring and/or repeating certain points previously discussed, but I want to make sure I am on the right path. Believe it or not I like to know what I am doing and why I am doing it, so that I don't get hit with any unpleasant surprises before I cross the goal line!).
The immediate problem is not one of being able to convert D700 RAW images in ACR. Before I made my initial post I had already gone to the Adobe website, downloaded the Camera RAW 5.4 updated plug-in, and then installed it in my PSE 6 for Mac program. The immediate problem is that I can't import RAW images from my D700 into iPhoto 6. In the past I readily imported RAW images from my Nikon D200 into iPhoto 6. Once they were in iPhoto I easily opened them in PSE 6 where I converted them via the ACR plug-in and then edited them as needed. With the D700 RAW images I can't import them into iPhoto 6 in the first place.
Therefore, my goal is to import RAW images from my D700 into iPhoto just like I have done with my D200 RAW images. I don't want to employ certain workarounds suggested by my fellow Nikonians. My understanding is that to accomplish this goal I have to do the following:
1. Upgrade my OS from OS X 10.4.11 Tiger to OS X 10.5.6 Leopard
2. Upgrade my iPhoto '06 program to iPhoto '09
Is my understanding correct? Please advise.
Bob
P.S. Barbara Brundage's PSE 4 The Missing Manual was the first PSE book I bought. It served me well, and I still occasionally refer to it even though I currently use PSE 6 for Mac.
