I just got my iPhone 5 days ago, and now I have this problem too. I've tried everything to fix it from resetting, restoring, plugging headphones in and out many times, syncing, and nothing seems to work.

This only started yesterday, and it seems like many of you have the same problem as well. I hope this is only a glitch for a small amount of the phones, where I can just get a new one.

I know the feeling! What is the point of having an iPhone if you have to remove all music, most applications and games...in fact anything that made it different from standard mobile phones. Mine flicks in headphone mode constantly and I am having to use it constantly in speakerphone to converse with anyone! Have tried removing memory by the memory scan app suggested, but I am still left with a phone that flicks into headphones mode after between 10 sec and 2 min of use. Have thought of taking it to Apple for looking at and replacing, but I have had the phone (& problem) for over a year now and am so irritated I don't trust a new iPhone would be any better! Fix it Apple or I will go back to the old Nokia!

Yep, another case here. I have had a problem with my first iPhone (white case with small cracks) and got it replaced by a new one at T-Mobile (I live in Germany), shortly prior to warranty's ending.

Now I have an iPhone that looks perfect but keeps changing to headphone mode every 5 minutes. And of course, warranty is now gone, so no chance to replace it again.

That's actually another funny thing about this warranty: I get a complete brand new iPhone and the warranty does not get extended for at least 3 months after that, which I believe would be a reasonable thing.
How can one say that the new received iPhone does not have a new issue? Well, mine has...

Let's see if Apple will come up with a fix for this extremely annoying problem, as I don't intend spending a penny on the repair of a problem I'm not responsible for.

Happened to my wife's iPhone 3G 8GB last night. Really strange and I thought I tried everything and then I read somewhere else in the discussion to try "suck air out of the headphone jack" and the iPhone was fixed right away. I sucked really hard for just a few seconds (need to really seal my mouth around the headphone jack area). Must has dis-lodged some stuck wires or contact in the jack or the motherboard. Another thought - if this works for everyone, don't try to blow air in - may make the close contact inside stuck even tighter.

Hope this helps and thanks whoever tried the "sucking" thing first.

Guys,

I had the same issue discribed by all of you. I've tried everything that I could, I've reset and restore the phone clean up and suck the earphone jacks and nothing helped, I also noticed an mount of complain involving the 3G 8gb. Do you guys think it is a 3G 8gb unique problem?
it ***** and ****** me off a such good phone with a stupid problem like that and it seems there is no fix for.

I have this problem a few weeks (months?) and it drives me mad! Unfortunately, all tips and tricks solve *just consequence, not a reason*. In my case, sound switch in headphone mode every time, *when iPhone warm up* a little. And all those tricks, I have read about, work only when iPhone cool down back. Unfortunately, iPhone warms up very often (longer call, internet, GPS, game...), so my *iPhone is everything but phone*, now. I have iPhone more than a year, but it looks like this problem has appeared after upgrading into OS 3.x. But it might be just coincidence. I am going to reclaim iPhone and I am very surprised that there is still no official reaction from Apple to this serious problem.

I have the same problem.
It happened today when I received a call and I pressed the mute button (the lower vol button)
I made sereval attempts:
- restore
- complete restore
(both without or with backup)
- switch airplane mode
- run the scan memory app
- insert the jack (entering and going out in ipod app)
- many attempt with volume buttons ecc. and settings
- air to remove debri
- all the other things suggested

The strange is:
with headphone NOT inserted:
1) I can hear the sound of ringtones and messages when I'm in the setting menu but...
2) I cannot hear when I receive a phone call or a message.
3) I can hear ipod music, audio from videos (youtube or qt) but NOT the audio of applications (games and others)
4) I cannot hear the buttons sounds and keyboard click (on settings are on

with headphone inserted all working with apps and games but not with buttons, keydoard click and ringtones/messages

Please Apple FIX this problem

(my system is 3.1.2 (7D11) on a 3G iphone 8GB)

I have been having the same issue for about 2 months. It's very frustrating! I constantly miss calls. I have tried cleaning out the jack, I've tried the app that clears the memory (that makes my battery run down really fast so I deleted it), I've done the rapid fire headphone in and out of the jack cha cha, resets, restarts, everything I can think of. I have also seen my phone just sitting on the coffee table power up from sleep mode for no reason. And when I am talking on the phone it will switch off the speaker phone feature. It's just really unstable and has been since the last round of updates. Come on Apple give us a firmware/software update that will fix this!

😟 I have an iPhone 3G 8GB out of warranty.
Yesterday I was testing the app Land Line Dialer ver. 1.5. Basically this app gives your iPhone the ability to make your wired phone make calls from your address book.
The important thing is that uses the speaker when doing this.
I have an iPhone that is stuck in headphone mode all the time now because we are in summer here, I say this because I think the issue is related with temperature or perhaps acts like a trigger to this problem.
While the iPhone is "stuck" this app make tones sounds via speaker, this also then activate the clicking sound from the keys and the unlock and power down sounds.
The thing is that when I launch an app like voice notes or the iPod, the iPhone comes back to "stuck in headphone mode" and I can’t hear a sound at all.
My point is, this app is not intentionally triggering the audio system to begin to work again, but anyway the fact is that the code in this app is making the audio back to life.
This happened every time I try it systematically, many times so Im sure this is not a coincidence.
So if there is someone reading this that have access to the source code (maybe Apple or the Developer) please take a look because there something there that is doing the trick with this issue, or at least maybe is the tip of the iceberg that could resolve this.
Hope this can contribute to kill this BUG and end this post 😉

I rang Apple Support to state the same problems with my iPhone 3G everyone here is also experiencing. They told me they were "unaware" of the problem and I had to pay $250 AU to have it looked at as my phone was out of the 12 month warranty. I was one of the first to get an iPhone here in Perth and at the time there was no Applecare available for it (it was for the 3GS debut) - this was a pressing point as I always get Applecare for my products.

The surprising thing here is that the Support staff told me that they were unaware of the problem, I did mention there were quite a few discussions on the very topic. One of the other discussions has been archived so no other replies can be attached - suspicious or not?

I suggest everyone who has these same problems call their local Apple Support and make complaints. Before they send in the iPhones PLEASE take photos of the headphone jack to prove they do NOT have water damage.

I believe this is a heat related issue linked to the latest firmware. I never had this problem before 3.1.2. I was waiting for the iPad announcement to see if the new iPhone OS was going to be released which could possibly have alleviated the problem. But it looks like we have to wait till June/July. Why pay $250 for it now if a firmware update will fix it. This also means I'm stuck with a brick for 3-4 months.

Funnily enough I left Nokia after using their products exclusively for 14 years due to their very bad customer service. Im wondering if Apple will give me the chance to go even half that distance with their iPhones ( I have been using Macs since 1994). The older I get the less inclined I am to put up with bad products and service.

Thats my rant. Please Apple fix this!

zedem,

I think that this is like therapy groups ... first step is to admit your ilness.
So Apple please let us know that you are aware of this problem.
May be then you could find the solution.
And mean while we (the costumers) at least know you are working on something and not having the feeling you are giving your back to us.
Luck to everyt body for a solution on mute iPhones.

Cheers, Nicolas.

Not sure that this problem relates to the headphone jack. I NEVER use my headphones but often use bluetooth in my car and the phone often does not have any sounds after I have been using bluetooth. It is as if the phone is still trying to send the sounds through bluetooth even though no devices are connected. Has to be a software fault?
