i book keys wearing off

There seems to be quite a few people leaving posts on the discussion forum because they are finding that the letters are wearing off on their new G5 i books, I personally am on my second key board in just 4 months and have 6 keys with letters nearly worn off completely on this new replacement keyboard. Yet we have two apple desk top computers here at home and three apple machines at my office and in 10
years of using apple computers we have never had problems with key boards.
I have also read that people with older apple laptops have not experienced
this problem and I have three friends with Powerbook that have not had the same problem. If there is any one else out there with this problem, I suggest that as many people as possible LEAVE POSTS ON THE DISCUSSION FORUM To give a clearer idea of just how many people are having this problem. Is it just one faulty supplier or has the quality of the apple key boards suffered in a bid to cut prices? I for one am very unhappy to have spent a great deal of my limited income on an important peace of equipment to be experiencing such a repeated problem.

The 3 replacements I've received have been identical to the original--both in key location and keycap lettering wearing off! (Thought the wear has been in somewhat different places.. and the amount of time to wear has varied-- from just a couple of weeks to somewhat more than that.)

I even tried applying different hand creams to the old one, to the remaining letters, to see if that affected the wear. It did not!

I think there are several reasons this thread gets resurrected from time to time--and why it's important to keep it alive:

1) New people discover the problem.

2) It now may be affecting other keyboards.

3) New questions come up... or wrinkles on old ones.

4) We keep hoping that someone will have received a real fix!

5) It's important for Apple to realize how widespread and serious a problem this is.

Why, for example, does discoloration of the Intel Macs get a fast response, when this does not? (Actually, that's probably easy-- the new Macs are the bread and butter of the company and if they are flawed it directly casts Apple's latest in a real bad light! The iBook G4s are old news!)

6) Whether Apple's policies have changed-- e.g., vis-a-vis replacement keyboards-- affects us all and needs to be kept current.

etc.

It is important that people contact Apple directly and not suffer through this-- and alert them to the problem.

Regardless of your warranty, Apple Care status, I would call the customer support number and ask for a replacement (insist on a replacement).

Apple support number 1-800-275-2273--just stay on the line (ignore all the menu choices) and eventually someone will come on.

They're incredibly helpful.

Here's the support web page address: http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

If you click on "get a repair" you'll see various choices.

"Canadian customers, please call 1-800-263-3394. "

Here's a page that lists phone numbers and e-mail contact info, including international and by topic.

http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html

One thing to do is to ask if there is a fix YET! And if the rep expresses a lack of familiarity with the problem, explain that's it bee a long-standing one and refer tham to the Apple support discussion boards wehre there are SEVERAL threads about it.

Hope that helps!
