    Wow, this is scary, so many dying all at the same time! I'm sure not going to rush into dumping $500 into the 2TB!

    If you have Apple Care it's covered at least. The 'genius' I talked to tried to tell me it wasn't but then he checked with his manager who said it was.

    I'm glad people are reporting it, Apple needs to know something is wrong with them. Maybe I'll just go with an Airport Extreme next time!

    And another... 500g Time capsule about 18months old. green light flashes for a fraction of a second and then nothing. Odd. Very frustrating. Really didn't need this. I was expecting much longer usage than 18 months. I'll try a hard reset but Im not very hopeful.

    Wow, how odd that they're all dying so close together!

    That's exactly what happened to mine, dead other than flash when plugging it in.

    If you have AppleCare it's covered, if not, I really feel for you!

    Add another Dead TimeCapsule to the ever expanding list:

    Maybe it's been happening right along, but it just happened to me, so now I know and care: No LED, no power, just a dead brick 1 TB 17.4 month-old, $479 TimeCapsule sitting on the Genius Bar of the Palo Alto Apple Store with the Genius telling me that the out-of-warranty service replacement cost would be $419 (when the new 1 TB TC is sitting on the shelf 25 feet away for $299).

    Genius was very sorry he couldn't do anything, but thought it might be just a power supply issue and maybe a 3rd party repair shop could replace. BUT it seems there are no replacement parts available (per We Fix Macs in Palo Alto) so there's no 3rd party repair to be had. Hmmm.

    What's the reasonable life-expectancy for a hard drive and a wireless router? Could I buy an over-the-wire service for backup for less than the $27.48 per month I just paid? Is it reasonable to pay $299 for a replacement TC and then spend another 33% of the purchase price on AppleCare to try and stretch the useful life a new TC investment out to 3 years?

    BTW it sounds like TimeMachine encrypts the back up so you can't readily move it to another drive.

    Wow, how fun. I have a 500gb TC, that I have had for 18 months. Which seems to be the magic number for how old before they fail. I hope mine does not. If it does, I will probably just buy a new Airport Extreme and plug a usb drive into it. Why spend all this money on a TC when they may only last for under 2 years.

    Well, I got home with my replacement TC and it squealed for 30 seconds with the light on, and died. Just like the other one. GRRRRRRRR!

    I think I might go the AE route too!

    Yep, that darn G5 shipping delay!

    Wow, this amazes me. I am surprised that Apple would allow poor quailty control of any of their branded products. Good luck with TC #3..

    Add me to the list as well. ONE MONTH OLD 500 GB TC just died tonight...

    I work for an Apple reseller and bought this through our employee purchase program. I'm hoping our distributor will exchange it.

    Hi. Just returned from vacation to discover that my 1 gig Time capsule has failed. No status light on. Just a brief green flash from the ports when connecting to a power supply. No luck with factory reset. The unit is about 1 year old.

    Wow, another one bites the dust!

    And my replacement one only lasted 30 seconds. I guess I'll just keep getting it replaced over and over, but I won't buy one again. Too bad too, cuz I loved it and recommended it to friends but now I'm telling them DON'T BUY ONE!

    At least not until they fix whatever the issue is.

    Okay, let me correct myself. The Apple Store just called and I told them that the new one died, they said yeah, that was my OLD one! Whoops!

    So I get my REAL replacement today, hopefully it will work.

    The trend, perhaps, continues. My TC just went TU, or at least the disk did. The geniuses are busy, but I hope to exchange it by talking to a merely smart person at my friendly neighborhood apple store.

    I assume this is kosher if still under warranty?
