Time Machine Dead??

Hi, I've got a problem with my Time Machine. It is an awesome thing. Used for storage, backup, and as wireless router. Was working last night, then this morning, I woke up and I got on my Mac and opened the internet. Nada. Then I went to my PC (ethernet connected to the TC). Nada. Followed by trying to reset it's setting, unplugging, replugging, etc. Then I looked, and the front status light is blank. It's not green, amber, blinking, nothing. In the back, when I plug it in, the back lights will blink(like it does when you plug it in) but nothing else to indicate it turns on. What should I do? Any help? Anybody else with this problem?

The 4th Gen Time Capsules are VERY heat sensitive. It is a well known and highly documented problem. However, most of the time, if you pick up the 'phone and speak to someone at Apple they are more than helpful. If your TC is out of warranty (check your local country for legal issues) then you need to see if you are covered by law.

A TimeCapsule is a backup device and as such you should be able to "reasonably expect" the device to last longer than the one or two years that these seem to offer. Furthermore, ANY device that uses moving parts (such as drive or fan) is going to experience a failure at some point in its life. The increasing use of SSD technology will obviously raise the reliability, but these drives are not yet in the TC range.

In the mean time, keep your TCs in cool conditions, do not stack them, and try to give them space between them to let as much air circulate as possible. Heat is the greatest threat to these devices, quickly followed by dirty power. Both threats can be reduced by judicious placement and the use of anti-surge or UPS devices.
