Netflix on Apple TV

Does anyone know if Apple TV plans to support Netflix streaming videos? We would hate to have to choose between Apple TV and a similar device like Roku that does support our Netflix subscription.

PC, Windows XP Pro, SP3

Apple would surely sell more ATV's if the system would run Netflix.
If at least the I-Tunes could provide the same service and price as Netflix, that would make the REAL competition. Apple is only trying to force me to stuck with I-Tunes option, which just desapoint me.
Netflix strategy however, is being very smart, now any piece of hardware out there can play Netflix, I guess... why buy movies from I-Tunes? And more... If Netflix start selling musics, then I-Tunes may be in serious problem.

No, but must of us here are consumers. I think it would be a positive for Apple to have Netflix on the TV as it would drive more volume of the device (good for Apple), increase usage activity and it would make it a lot easier for many consumers of the TV for their digital video needs and wants.

That said, the business plan for Apple is clearly the proprietary iTunes store - be it TV, iPhone or the upcoming iPad. I doubt they will allow Netflix integration as it doesn't fit their apparent business model or strategy.

That is why I own a Roku box too.

No, Roku does not have access to the iTunes store but I would be inclined to believe that would be an Apple choice more than Roku. Roku does provide access to Amazon VOD, Pandora, MLB.com and many other "channels" in addition to Netflix VOD.

I'm not taking a position on this other than it would have been convenient for me personally to not get another device to access Netflix VOD and I still think there is a decent argument that such an arrangement would helpful to drive volume for the TV device and elevate it above "hobby" status as Steve Jobs referred to it in his 2007 interview with Walt Mossberg.

For me, it is what it is...

I think "hobby" actually means experiment. Apple was testing the waters with the ATV to see if there was a market for such a product as a means to boost iTunes sales. That's a key point the Netflix Nitwits don't seem to get. Apple isn't selling ATVs because it wants to make a profit from those sales specifically, Apple is selling ATVs as a mechanism to increase iTunes store sales. Putting Netflix on an ATV would be counterproductive.

I have AppleTV and I also have a BD Player with Netflix. I think the point of ATV getting Netflix is moot. They are competing technologies. Apple wants you to rent or buy from the itunes store and Netflix wants you to sign up for the disc via mail service to get free streaming of outdated titles for the most part. The disc via mail is the competition to itunes, not the streaming video. You can't buy or rent movies off of Netflix streaming, this is where Apple has it. Netflix also has gotten poor at sending you the #1 pick in the queue. I'll keep it for a while more, but I do wish ATV had a few free streamers like Netflix.

Let's see: I've got Netflix and Amazon On Demand streaming apps on my Internet connected Vizio HDTV and Netflix, Amazon Video, You Tube, Pandora, etc on my Internet connected Sony Blu-ray player, so I don't really need it on my Apple TV as well. Apple TV provides unique capability: iTunes video and music and video streaming connections from our Macs and iPads.
