My AVG antivirus scan found a number of iTunes files that supposedly found the trojan horse small.BOG (whatever the heck that is) infection. Based on the postings, lots of people have found it. Can anyone tell me their thoughts?
I just experienced the same exact thing. Seems like all the posts on this issue are from Jul. 24, 2009 (today). I have no Idea what's going on. My computer let me uninstall itunes, but i don't plan on re-installing until I know what's going on. itunes was working fine before today.
I am an AVG reseller and I called them and they said that there is no virus it is just a prolem. They are working on correcting the issue ASAP. Use the resident scanner expetion method to get your itunes back.
I also have this problem. Is everybody running AVG 8.5 free edition? When I removed ITunes from my Vista Business pc and tried to reinstall ITunes from the apple website, I got about 40-50 trojan horse small.bog virus notices. When I looked at the source, it said that the bad files were coming from apple.com!
I called apple tech support, who passed me on to Iphone support, and finally to apple engineering who said that it will take 3-5 days for them to analyze the situation. This is a long time if the apple.com site is spreading a virus!!! AVG is standing behind their product. My system will not allow me to launch the ITunes software and now it is saying that my Google Desktop is corrupted.
I trust Apple more than my free AVG 8.5, so I uninstalled AVG and repaired my iTunes and all is well unless there really is a virus... I tried to stop AVG from removing the files, but it got rid of them in the vault and then iTunes no longer worked. After I repaired it, all is well.
Well i'm glad that I wasnt the only person with this problem , Woke up this morning and Wham! AVG trojan infection found .BOG , Is this an AVG fault or Apple ? We'll just have to see with the new AVG patch i spose , Temp fix is just to Add Itunes installation path to your AVG resident shield exceptions list, and it will run with no probs
There is nothing to worry about with this. It is a false positive. In other words, the latest update from AVG was messed up and is reporting a trojan that does not exist. AVG should eventually release a new update to fix their mistake.
Just adding my 2 cents. Sam problem here. I'm turning off my pc and going on vacation for a week. You guys get this mess figured out for me. FTR, I don't trust allowing exceptions to my antivirus unless it is something that I'm 100% sure is safe. So I'll wait.
Here's how I did it (Microsoft Vista OS and AVG Free)---------
1. Open AVG Free
2.Click "Tools" at the top, scroll down to "Advanced Settings"
3. Under the "Resident Shield" directory, (expand it if not already), click "Exceptions".
4. When the menu pops up, click "Add Path" at the upper right.
5. When the window pops up, click these folders in this order-
COMPUTER>HARD DRIVE or C folder>PROGRAM FILES(x86)>ITUNES
When you click on the iTunes folder, make sure you don't click the arrow, but click on the folder itself.
6. Hit okay and save your settings, click apply and exit AVG. When you look at the exceptions on AVG, the itunes directory should look like this C:\Program Files\iTunes\
7. Restart your computer.
8. When you turn it back on, open iTunes, it should go through a little setup process, then iTunes should work.
-------------------IF ITUNES STILL DOESN'T WORK, TRY MAKING ANOTHER DIRECTORY UNDER PROGRAM FILES(NOT X86). KEEP THE OLD (X86) EXCEPTION.---------------------------
This worked for me, good luck.
