Snow Leopard - will it kill iMovie HD?

I've got a question about Snow Leopard. Does anyone more tech savy than me know if installing Snow Leopard will brick iMovie HD ('06). I know it's old, but I've got a ton of themes and stuff for it and it just cranks out good video.

If you have a snow leopard build and also iMovie HD any help would be really appreciated.

Got a question for you. I have been using iMovie 9 now with Leopard. I got rid of Snow Leopard because of compatibilty issues with iMovie 6. I'm not sure I'll use iMovie 6 again but want to have that option open. I also would like to re-install Snow Leopard. Was it you who said that there are different ways to install it, and you installed it one way (whereas I installed it the typical way), and maybe that made the difference in ability to properly use iMovie 6?
Any suggestions? Thanks, Max

Wanted to revisit this thread now that I've played with it a few months.

I have two issues with iMovie 06 on a Snow Leopard machine that I don't have on the same machine when I book up with Leopard.

First... The exports are MUCH slower. On Leopard my exports are about 100 - 125% of the final project length. In Snow Leopard they are closer to 600 - 700% of the original project length.

Second... I too am getting some weird audio edits from other parts of the time line. It's still serviceable, but I can see the writing on the wall. It's gonna be bricked pretty soon.

I installed iMovie HD 6 BEFORE installing the iLife suit from the install disk, and now when I launch iMovie 6, nothing happens.

The program doesn't have the usual icon, and it's now only 2.6 MB. Opening it does nothing.

Has this happened to anyone else, and is there a fix? Does SL kill iMovie 6? Should I re-install the program?

Having installed Snow Leopard on 3 different computers, all of which use iMovie 6 regularly, I know that it will not brick iMOvie 6. However, I have a consistent issue with still frames/pictures. A transitionless change from still frame to anything (video, titles, black, etc.) will freeze the still frame for upwards of a second. This freeze will stick around even after exporting.

However, even though it's a nuisance, there's a quick fix. If you add a one-frame transition (crossdissolve or Fade In/Out preferably) it will eliminate the freeze.

Like I said, nuisance, but it's better than nothing.

Can anyone comment on installing iLife 06 on a new Mac that has only the current iLife suite. I put in my old iLife 06 disk and the installer won't let me uncheck iDVD or give a specific location for the app. The only thing it will let me change is the location of the themes.

If you run the iLife 06 installer on a new Mac, will it overwrite iMovie/iDVD 09? If so, and I pull them back from TimeMachine, will they still work?

You don't want iDVD 6, but you do want iMovie 6.

Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.

Delete iLife 9. Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife install disks.

Now re-install iLife 9. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.

Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.

Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:

Open a terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife08.plist"
(No quotes)

Install iMovieHD6.dmg (Formerly available from Apple)

This is said to work with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.

Has anyone had problems with Leopard/Snow Leopard and "Export to Camera"? I am still running iMovie HD on a G4 eMac but have tried this on an eMac and 2 MacBooks. I can no longer export my finished movies out to tape on my Sony DVR-960. iMovie cranks up and claims the camera but only exports audio. The video is black.

I reinstalled Tiger on an external drive along with iMovie HD and the same projects will export just fine. Is this a Quicktime problem or Video driver problem?
