Windows 7 and Time Capsule

Hi guys,

I just got my Time Capsule and it was up and running in no time. I'm having the following problem:

I can see, read and write small files to the Time Capsule disk, but when I try to copy a large file (175MB) it just refuses. I get an error:

There is a problem accessing T:\
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again

I tried suggestions mentioned in other and this forum: change the LAN Manager authentication level and disable the 128-bit requirement, but still the same thing.

My Mac mini mounts, reads and writes fine via Windows 7. Please help me out.

P.S.
- I have the final (MSDNAA) version of Windows 7
- I have the most recent Time Capsule update (7.4.2)
- There is a Time Capsule password on it, which is the same as my Windows password
- The workgroup is on both systems 'WORKGROUP'

I can't see how updating the airport utility could fix this.

I've never had to install the airport utility to access the TC from previous versions of windows hosts - I've just mapped the drive ad-hoc and provided login credentials every time. This has worked each and every time.

It just looks like the CIFS part of windows 7 and the TC (and other samba based nas devices) just won't play together.

It just seems that they're not compatible. It's been over 4 months now since win7 RTM has been available too, so I wouldn't expect a fix either. It's a real shame, but it's time to start looking for a new NAS.

Hi guys,

Just to confirm that reverting the firmware to 7.3.2 seems to have removed the problem as far as accessing the Time Capsule from Windows 7. From the Airport Utility, Check Updates while holding the Options key.

Secondly, I opened the Time Capsule and placed the disk on an external SATA cradle and using Snow Leopard's Disk Utility I discovered using Verify Disk that the disk was also corrupted. Easily fixed using the Repair option in Disk Utility.

All seem back to normal.
I will post again if something changes.

Hi.

I suggest if you have a recently purchased a TC 1TB or 2TB then send it back. I'll give Apple their due, that was painless.

This is the only way to get a companies attention with customer churn/product return.

I spent weeks with the Windows 7 issues and tech support telling me we only support Apple OS when on the site it said Windows compatible.

I'm hoping this post is not removed because of not following the "party" line that Apple just works. It clearly does not with this product. 5Ghz performance with line of sight to a MBP? 🙂

Does anyone know where I can find 7.3.2? It seems like the problem is fixed with this version, but I cant find it anywhere. It's not listed anywhere in my Airport and even though it seems to be listed a lot on the Internet, the links are always actually for 7.4.2, not 7.3.2.

Can someone just zip it up and put it on a file share website somewhere please?

TIA

See this is the thing. That link is not helpfull at all. Do you think there would be so many issues and posts if it was that easy for everyone?
It does not help me get 7.3.2 software. Or any other version other than the latest one.

If only I could find a working link somewhere to download 7.3.2 and put it on my local machine.
Then I would be able to install it.
It seems that Apple has scoured the Internet and stopped anyone from hosting and offering it.
I beg someone, anyone....if you have 7.3.2 on your PC, please upload it somewhere so I can use my Time Capsule again (read: move all my files off it to a real peice of working hardware then trashing the Time Capsule).

Sorry, not following you here. I'm presuming that you have the Airport utility as you'll need that to flash the firmware anyway. If so, you have all you need to download the firmware direct from apple..

from the linked page...

*If I have a computer or device that does not work well with an AWD with the latest update, how can I install previous (earlier) versions of firmware?*

1. Open AirPort Utility.
2. From the AirPort Utility menu, hold the Option key ( *Control key in Windows* XP and Vista) and *choose Check for Updates*....
3. *Select the specific firmware version you require*.
4. Click Download.
5. Select your base station and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click on the AWD icon.
6. Choose Base Station > Upload Firmware.
7. Select a firmware version and click OK.

I've just tried this on my mac and PC and it works fine... forgive me if I can't see the problem here..

It's been a while since I visited this thread and I don't remember seeing this mentioned before.

I have a 1TB time dual band time capsule. While accessing the disk from windows 7 x64, i get all kinds of connection errors and eventually need to reboot either the time capsule or windows to get access to the disks back.

My workaround is Windows XP Mode. Windows XP inside the virtual machine can access the disk fine. It can also access the host drives on Windows 7.

My next intended work around is to try installing a server operating system in the virtual machine to try and re-share the time capsule disk and access it that way from windows 7.

To reiterate, I've had zero issues accessing the time capsules disk using xp mode and transferring stuff to/from windows 7.

To be fair to Apple, they don't seem to have caused this issue. It is a problem that Windows 7 introduced to OSX-Windows file sharing. I think this is independent of any Apple hardware/firmware.

This problem is not isolated to Time Capsules. I have a Airport Extreme Base Station and it's USB-connected airdisk suffers the same problems.

In addition, simply copying a large file from my Macbook to my Win7 media center suffers from the same problem: The file does not complete copying and the connection fails. After that I cannot connect to the Win7 machine at all (this is via Ctrl-K in Finder and entering smb://win7 ipaddress). Notably, if I restart my Mac, the problem remains, but if I restart the Win7 machine the problem resolves. Thus, the error is on the Windows box.

Though I'm sure Apple could come up with a fix to resolve this compatibility flaw, it really was Microsoft's fault and responsibility to fix. I'd be amazed if they actually did, however. So, Apple, how's about a patch?

Does anyone else suffer from similar file-copying/-sharing issues when simply connecting from OSX to Win7?

So I downloaded to 7.3.2 and it seemed to fix the problem in that accessing the directories on the time capsule was smooth and fast. However large file transfer (Im talking about gigs of stuff) gave me a similar problem, only this time, instead of totally dying, the file transfer trickled down to a few Bps.

BUT....looking back at this thread, I saw eripsni's post about using file commander. I was able to copy a 7Gig file over using this software! Here's hoping it keeps going.
Thanks eripsni.
