MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857 - Help! Won't recognise or burn cdrs/dvds.

Hi All,

I have a MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857 drive in my macbook pro. I've copied all the specs below. Basically my drive doesn't recognise any cdrs or dvdrs (these work on other macs fine). It also won't let me burn any cd's or dvds with toast or itunes. This is the same problem in Mac or bootcamp windows XP mode. The most i can do is occassionally rip a cd in itunes in either mac or pc mode. It hasn't worked for about a year now and i just gave up but my brother advised i post on here in case anyone can help. Any help would be greatly appreciated since it's really frustrating not being able to back up my stuff or run any cdrs etc.

Cheers,

Amr

Same problem here!

*But SOLVED!!!*

I have a UJ-857E Drive with ZA0E firmware on a Macbook Pro 17"...

As everyone here, my drive won't burn CD's nor DVD's and would have hard time reading almost every disk I tried...

After read hundreds of forums, I tried to change the firmware with the simpleflash utility from Ben11 with no success at all...

Then, I did the same thing that "khanklatt" describes in his post and that solved the problem.

I whant to thank "khanklatt" and all others for sharing their experiences which has helped me to fix my drive and spare me $200 bucks as that's what it would cost me here in Mexico to get a new drive.

Good luck with your drives to everyone!!

Hi terribledancer.

I had the same problem, with my MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E, witch stop reading different brands of DVD. It happen when I switch from Sony DVD-R to Verbatim DVD-R.
I have tried all the solutions you can find on this forum: resetting PRAM and Syst. Control Mangem. and "playing" with firmware.
But only one and real simple thing save me was - Using DVD Lens Cleanser!
Weird, I know... But worth trying.
Hope It'll work for you!
