Border Art, is it possible in Pages?

I have seen with the help of the User guide how to add basic lines or a set of 'Photo Frame' borders to text boxes, but is it possible to add border art more than just these basic lines?
I was thinking of small gif images of stars, flowers, crosses, shapes, wavy lines etc.

Searches in the pdf or the help section of pages does not seem to mention it at all, it does not even seem to have been mentioned here on the forum before. Lots of reference to clip art though, so may be it is done some how with small clipart images, but I cnat see how at the moment.

Neil,

*One work around* would be to create a text box the length of the sides and paste the graphics in as inline graphics at the size you want. You can use letter spacing to distribute them evenly on the length of the line.

For the vertical sides do the same in a narrow text box and use line spacing (leading) to distribute them.

Arrange the text boxes as you would like them and group them.

*A second more flexible method* is to create a text box full of the inline graphics in several rows at whatever +letter spacing+ and +line spacing+ you want. Overlay another smaller text or image box, with text wrap to suit, to reveal a single set of images all round.

This way you can allow more than enough images to fill the top, bottom and sides and stretch or reduce the 2 overlapping boxes to suit. Any images over will pop at the bottom right corner and you can delete forward to get rid of them.

Remember to always think outside of the box. 🙂

Neil,

The Mac and Pages are not synonymous.

If you really miss certain features in Microsoft Word, you can always use the Mac version of Word or look to other software of which there is a wide choice.

True, but now since I have bought it and moved over to Mac, I ought to use it. I use Open Office on my laptop and Ubuntu machines, and do still have the old Dell PC working here alongside the Mac, for things the Mac just cant do.

I have spent a lot of money on this * machine so feel I should use it, plus I cant really afford any more software.....looking at a 30% paycut from work next year, and wondering about paying the mortgage.

It is used mainly for music, photo editing and video editing. Probably only need a Word Processing package 2 or 3 times a month for the odd letter or invitations, birthday card etc. Would have stuck with Ubuntu and Windows, but the girlfriend wanted a Mac because they looked nice, so no I have it I am not going to give up on it.

Thanks for the suggestions though

Don't blame the Mac. The Mac can absolutely do a lot more than you can imagine but you need the right software, that goes for any kind of computer.
There is also a learning threshold to overcome when changing software's and operating systems. You'll have to find your way.

Why not try to find some free programs that meet your needs. There is alot of them out on the Internet.

No, not blaming the Mac, it is my fault for being taken in and believing friends who have Macs who said it would all just work, and it would all be far easier than Windows. I got suckered in to believing them. I run Ubuntu linux on one machine at home, and I have a spare room at home with many 'experimental' machines with all sorts of different linux/BSD distros on them. I am fully aware of the difficulties that can come with swapping OS's, it is just that I hoped (believed the hype and what I was told) that Apple's OS would be easier than the rest. My fault entirely for being so gullible.

Over the last few months I have tried many bits of software for the GPS/Firewire/phone etc, etc, paid for and free ware, still a lot of issues seem to be hardware/driver issues rather thatn specific software issues. Have got Open Office Aqua for Mac, but want to use the software I have paid for, it is obviously a good bit of kit, just not as intuitive or easy as I was hoping it would be.

Unfortunately she only wanted it because she liked the look of the Mac screen, which Apple then dis-continued, (after I paid for it) during the 8 week delivery period it took to get the machine. The store offered me the 30 inch Cinema screen for an extra £700, or a Samsung screen for an extra £50, so she did not even get the screen she wanted. She has pretty much given up on using the Mac, and when ever I come home I usually find the 5 year old WinXp Dell up and running because she has tried to read her mail and the Mail window has opened off screen and it is only half visible and not draggable. I have since found an app that allows you to re gain control of frozen app windows by using keyboard shortcuts, but she still prefers the XP machine for ease of use.

Neil,

The ease of use myth comes from the older Classic Mac OS which was a much simpler and less complex system. Oddly enough once Apple made it more difficult and a cyclical pain like Windows, people went for it in droves.

If you are looking for a word processor with a good balance between features and simplicity I highly recommend the free:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21977/itext-express

I virtually live in it and find endless new uses for it, far beyond mere word processing.

I think you do need to look beyond Windows' features. The way things work, and work together on the Mac is outside what you would have experienced on the PC. There is a lot below the apparently simple user interface. Unfortunately Apple has done an excellent job of keeping things out of sight in a way that breaks its own, let alone common sense, user guidelines.

So having dismissed the "obviousness" of the modern Mac, you will need a little homework to reveal what really lies beneath, and let you really enjoy a different environment for computing.

In my case the ease of use thing came from other users, two cousins, and 4 work collegues, they all said it was going to be easy, and since I paid at least 3 times what I would for a Windows PC, I kind of expected it to be better....less crashing, window freezes, menus appearing in random places on the screen, and having to shut down by pressing and holding the power button.

Will look at iText express and see how it goes,

Cheers

Neil
