constant faint beeping...what is it?

Hi Rachel,

1. if you mute the sound panel (check box, not just turning the analog slider down) - does the sound go away ?

2. if you turn up the sound in the sound control - does the sound increase ?

3. lastly, if you boot up in safe mode - (hold down Shift key at startup) - does this impact the beeping you are hearing at all ?

Does the beeping happen only when you are typing? thats what mine does and its also really soft but it drives me insane

I have the same problem too, but its more like a faint whining noise. Kindof

Maybe it's the hard drive head parking. That can make a sound which is often described as a 'plink' sound. Happens every few seconds and it does not come from the speakers, but from the hard drive.

I have the same problem..try this if you would..I am having some success...

try changing you battery setting to a lower position
if on better performance
then move it to normal

and so on....

The lower I go the fainter the beep become...it takes a couple of seconds...

let me know if that changes the sitaution for you too!

I have heard some talk of a heatsink vibration..and it would make sense if this is happening because of the processor activity...

Thanks JB...I do believe that will help with those who have memory probs...and other system problems etc...

What I am experiencing and I believe Rachel is experiencing is a steady,rhythmic, non-stop "beep"...not a warning beep. It sounds like a system beep, a bit fainter though and again it is steady and non-stop. It is happening in (1) second intervals, and will drive you kinda nuts (like a metronome)..if you don't drown it out with backgroud noise.

Rachel am I correct?

This sounds like the same problem I am having. I've had my iBook since April and it just started making faint irregular "beeping" sounds yesterday. It happened to me while using Safari, and when I quit the program, the noises went away. They have yet to reoccur, but now I am nervous that something is going bad in my computer.

Have any of you been able to determine the source of the beeping?

Same problem, I have had my ibook 3 years in april and recently i have noticed a steady beep emitting from the area underneath the top left of keyboard. The beep is very steady and happens regardless of what program i am using. The beep goes away after restart.
