blu-ray authoring

Posted this in compressor forum but this might be more appropriate over here. Just got a project to produce a video and deliver a blu-ray replication master. This master will be used to replicate discs for retail, so I assume it will need AACS. Thanks ahead of time... Several questions:

What is the best program (mac or pc) to author a blu-ray disc with menus, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, 5.1 and stereo audio, the whole shebang?

To replicate I would need to deliver a blu-ray master as a cmf file structure?

How exactly does AACS encryption work? Do I run my blu-ray build through a separate program to get AACS? I'm in the dark about this part.

So far Sonic Scenarist and Blu-print are too expensive, toast doesn't do enough, so it seems Adobe Encore is my best bet if it really does what I've outlined above, except that I would have to buy the entire creative suite to get it (and I don't really need any of the other programs except for photoshop which I already have). Any suggestions/tips/advice?

Based on what you mentioned, you only have three choices at this point: Blu Print, Scenarist or Do Studio. The first 2 are unrealistic on price unless you plan on doing alot more BD in the future. Do Studio Runs 3k I believe. These are the only tools that output the images required. There is a Mac tool called Blu Streak which will take BD files output from any tool to give you CMF images for delivery to a replicator. However, Encore does not handle all the features you are looking for plus its incredibly buggy.

Here's an article that goes over whats involved.

AACS is the encryption that is required of ALL replicated titles. Its cost are high so make sure the client is aware. Also note that fees have recently been reduced.

The most important note is that Blu Ray authoring is nothing like DVD. It requires several months of planning, training and degugging/testing. Not to sound harsh but I can tell from your basic questions that you are not prepared to offer this kind of service to a client.

My suggestion is get a free demo of Do Studio, read up about the technology with books and ask questions on forums while you do your testing.

Another thing to consider is the costs of authoring. You wouldn't find a vendor to do the title you mentioned for less than 10K. Add this to replication costs and AACS licensing and your looking at about $5-7/ unit. Unless the client wants to replication 10 thousand + units, it possible that your client is not ready for BD - Also the main reason why so few great independent titles are not seen on BD.

Again - you should checkout Sonic's DVDit Pro HD. It's a $500 app and does most of what you need. In addition, we have replicated many BD25s from masters produced with it, so I can validate it works.

If you get stuck, PacificDisc can author your project in one of our Scenarist Suites for $350/hour.
