Battery Issues with 3.0.1

After upgrading my 3GS to 3.0.1, battery life has dropped dramatically. Before, I could make it through a whole day (12-14 hours standby, 3-4 hours of use) and the battery would be anywhere from 20-30%. After the update now, I'm lucky to make it halfway through the day.

Another problem I noticed was battery percentage "jumping". I would check my phone, and it would show 15% battery life. As I was using it, the battery percentage jumped up and down between the original 15% and 50%. My friend, who also has a 3GS, has noticed this also.

I'm trying a restore now - and see if that has any affect for today.

Weird. Yesterday my 2 week old iPhone 3GS died. It was charged fully overnight but only lasted 5 hours. In that time I had made no calls, had sent 4 photos via email; had bluetooth on and connected several times to my Tomtom. Luckily I was near the Apple Store. They docked it and the screen showed the battery was dead? I bought a car charger but after charging it for a couple of minutes it came to life at 65%??? The charging bar and the charge% top right appear to be well out of sync.

Today with bluetooth OFF between 0800hrs-1700hrs it only dropped to 86% ??

I too have this same problem, and it's most certainly since the 3.0.1 upgrade. I too have reset completely as "new" (several times), and it still has the problem.

I think someone on this thread is on to something, because recently I've installed the Facebook app, and Maf** Wa** (so, yes, I'm on it more than before, but not by much. Also, the meter jumping around, is as much of concern, as actual battery life. However, battery life is also worse.)

I'm going to reset, and leave the apps off for a day or so, and confirm the apps are involved or not.

I'll post back.

The problem is in Middle East also. I am having the same problem. I don't restore from Back-Up as I always use 'New Phone Set-Up' and the problem is still existing as the battery does not long enough to use. My 3G last for 2 to 3 days but other iphone which is 3GS 32GB will last less than 24 hours. While on standby will take 10 to 15% (7 hours standby) and when I am using it, every 5 minutes will take 2 to 5%. Apple should fix this problem as soon as possible as this problem does not exist in the US only but global problem.

I have also been experiencing this issue. I noticed that my battery percentage was jumping around one day, it jumped from 60% to 17% and then back to 60% in literally a minute. It was so frustrating to not be able to use the phone, as the battery seemed as though it drained within a short span of time. I decided to plug my 3GS into the charger, alongside my mother's 3G and allow them to charge for the same amount of time, and then remove them both from their chargers at the same time. We allowed them to sit for a short while, and her phone seemed to stay fully charged for a significantly longer time than mine, as my phone drained down to about 70% while her battery bar was still full (or at least it seemed that way, considering the percentage isn't an option for the 3G.)

I made an appointment at the Apple store near me, went to the Genius Bar and was told that I was indeed experiencing battery issues, and a ton of dropped calls. This was on the 16th of August, and now I seem to be experiencing the same problem with the replacement phone. I did a restart, allowed my phone to be app-free for a day, and it continued to happen. I am now waiting for it to fully drain on its own, and I am hoping for the best. This is very frustrating, but I am happy to know that I am not the only person experiencing this issue! I do hope that it is fixed soon.

You are definitely not the only one experiencing these issues. I too started with an iPhone 3Gs with no problems. I am basically a few text message, check a few e-mails type of user. Now I am also seeing my battery percentage drop to 96% immediately after undocking. Then my percentage bounces from 59% down to 29%. I turn the phone off and it is at 70% when I put it back on. So I decided to maybe it is a power management issue so I decided to run it down to 0%. I got the usual low battery warnings but then as it approached 6% it jumped to 59%! At this point is appeared to be running down normally but at 37% the phone went dead. Before this all happened I had already tried every fix listed in this forum. I even went to the Apple Store and had them do a new phone install in case there was a corruption in my download. We're not in Kansas anymore Toto...

In the past two days my battery issues appear to have vanished. I've gone from the phone being completely flat by 6-7pm, to have to actually deliberately do stuff to flatten it when I go to bed as I want to be putting it through complete charge cycles overnight.

I've not done anything different other than as I say put it through some complete charge cycles, but then I'd done that previously. It's still not as good as my old 2G, but it is a least now acceptable.

There is no problem with 3.0.1, as 59.99 million phones do not have a problem; there is a problem in the upgrade process that resulted in corrupt application data being restored to the phone. If it were a widespread problem there would be millions of posts here (even assuming that only 1% of users ever go to a forum). So far I have seen less than 100 different individuals report the problem. As I've been an iPhone user and forum member since day 1 I've seen the number of posts when there is a widespread problem (as there was with 2.0); it is orders of magnitude greater than the reports I've seen for 3.0 OR 3.0.1.

But I'm not saying the problem isn't real if you have it; just that it is so rare that Apple may not address it or may not have enough information to address it. If they can't duplicate it they can't fix it. This is the downside of 50,000 apps in the app store; it could easily be some odd combination of apps that causes it.

The trick is to find the offending application(s). It is frequently mail; this one can be fixed be deleting mail accounts, rebooting, and adding the accounts back. It can be Safari; clearing cache will fix that. It can be any application that uses Notifications; try turning off Notifications in Settings and see if that makes a difference. If it does you then have to track down the specific application.

It can also be in the data network settings; some people have found that "Reset Network Settings" helps, others that re-entering the APN fixes it.

It's not one problem; there are several possible causes, and you need to take the time to try them.
