Battery Issues with 3.0.1

After upgrading my 3GS to 3.0.1, battery life has dropped dramatically. Before, I could make it through a whole day (12-14 hours standby, 3-4 hours of use) and the battery would be anywhere from 20-30%. After the update now, I'm lucky to make it halfway through the day.

Another problem I noticed was battery percentage "jumping". I would check my phone, and it would show 15% battery life. As I was using it, the battery percentage jumped up and down between the original 15% and 50%. My friend, who also has a 3GS, has noticed this also.

I'm trying a restore now - and see if that has any affect for today.

I finally decided to go ahead and restore as a new phone. Took a while to get all my music and apps back on there and, of course, I lost all my app data but it appears to have been worth it. My battery life is MUCH better.
Granted my problem wasn't as severe as some others here but I'm happy now.
Before I did the restore, while at work, by 11:00 my battery was at 90%.
Now, by lunch time I'm still at around 96 - 97%.
By the end of the work day I'm still in the upper 80s where as before I was usually in the 70-75% range.

I don't know what was causing the problem, though. Could have just been a glitch when I upgraded to 8.0.1.

I've been reading this thread in an attempt to figure out what to do with my 3GS that's had pitiful battery performance since doing the 3.0.1 update. Can you tell me where the setting to turn Notifications off is? I'll be ****** if I can find it. I'd like to try that before doing a full restore and starting off fresh (a major pain).

Thanks. Much appreciated.

That makes sense. I'm going to do a restore to factory fresh and then the painful exercise of getting all my apps and music and pics and videos and...... back on my phone. It has to be done though as my battery is just horrible since I did the 3.0.1 update. I know it isn't the update but probably has something to do with me stopping the update half way through and then picking it up the next morning. It seemed to work but something must have got corrupted.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

I too have found the battery life on my phone is terrible, I have switched off the 3G signal, location services, everything that saves on battery life. But since the update the battery life doesn't even last 10 hours before hitting 20%, or if I'm on a phone call for about 30 minutes then it hits the dreaded 20%. Here's hoping a new update is coming soon to fix it!!!

@lawrence: Would be interested how this fits in your theory:
I have a 3GS and a 2G. Both of them have battery issues when freshly restored and not restored from backup. firmware is 100% not corrupted, I checked the ipsw checksum, and I restored several times. the problem persists with no music on it, no apps, no nothing. my 2G was running perfectly before 3.0.

I wouldn't count on an update to fix it. There is nothing wrong with the current version; there IS something wrong with your phone. There are suggestions for fixing it in this thread and many other threads. You have the choice of waiting weeks or months for an upgrade that may or may not fix it, or you can action yourself to resolve the problem today as many of us have.

Possibly, but it is an almost vanishingly small number of people who have reported a problem. There were thousands of reports of problems here when v 2 came out, hundreds for v 3.0. The number of reports for 3.0.1 is in the dozens. Out of 60 million phones that is not a large enough number to identify where the problem is. Especially as many of those reports have different symptoms. And in all cases Apple will either fix or exchange the phone at a Genius Bar or via telephone. I don't see much of a case for a lawsuit.

no email accounts, no internet usage. i'm talking about plain phones here, being kept in standby!
I owned a 2G for almost 2 years, so I really know what to expect from an iphone when it comes to battery usage.

I agree with you on this: My battery life gets even worse when I put my apps on it, set up email, use the phone. But my battery life is really sucky to begin with.

I will get a replacement phone for my 3GS as soon as possible (my 2G is out of warranty, so no chance there) and really hope that it fixes my problem.

Still: 2G and 3GS have the same problem, and that means it's either a coincidence and both phones have a damages battery all of a sudden, or it's a software issue.
It may be that only a few people have it, and I don't expect this problem to be fixed with 3.1, that's why I will visit an apple store as soon as possible and get a replacement. But still I believe this is a software issue, at least partly.
