adding ram to a ibook G3 366

I am getting mixed messages as to the amount of ram that can be added to an ibook G3 366.
apple will sell me 512 mb, but elsewhere in support they say that the maximum that can be added is 256.
I have 64 build in plus 64 on top - i wish to up-grade to Tiger which needs a minimum of 256 - can i up-grade to tiger with my ibook???
thanks

Howdy. ๐Ÿ™‚ The answer to your question:

can i up-grade to tiger with my ibook???<</div>

depends. ๐Ÿ™‚ Does your iBook 366 have a firewire port? If so, then it is officially supported under Tiger. Here's a link to the system requirements:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html

And adding 512MB is a "Good Thing" when upgrading to Tiger. ๐Ÿ™‚ It will help immensely.

cheers!

Hey Ed

My brain cells are not firing on all cylinders (how's that for a mixed metaphor? LOL) - I forgot to mention:

If you are running an iBook 366 with Firewire, then it will not have a DVD drive. Tiger ships on DVD media. You can exchange the DVD for CD's - I would assume you could walk into an Apple store (if you have one nearby), or else you could follow this link:

http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/tigermediaexchangev3.pdf

This involves you shipping your DVD and $9.95 back to Apple, and they turn around and send you install CD-ROMs.

But, yes, with enough RAM (256 minimum, and 512 preferred), and the right installation media (CDs), your iBook will run Tiger. ๐Ÿ™‚

thanks guys
I have already exchanged my DVD for CDs
I have a small business and so have some 3 G4s desdktops, a G3 powerbook , a white ibook and a clamshell
I have a 4D program running on the the desktops and the powerbook running on OS9x. The program is upgrading to Tiger so i am trying to up-grade the system to Tiger - it looks like i won't be able to upgrade the powerbook so i wondered about upgrading the clamshell
so now i guess i get the 512mb - is Apple my best bet or does anyone know if and where i can get a compatible kingston or shikatronic, preferably in Canada if possible

thanks again

You could buy directly from Apple; they will charge you an arm and a leg, but the RAM will work. ๐Ÿ™‚ Or, you could online from another vendor, and save some money. I would suggest a Mac-knowledgeable vendor, one that guarantees their products. Kingston and Crucial make iBook memory. I've had great luck with OWC computing (here's a link to their iBook RAM page - you'll want the PC100 512MB at $98.97USD):

http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=192&type=Memory&TI=%23TimeFor mat%28Now%28%29%2C&shoupgrds=ShowUpgrades

I'm very happy with OWC, and am pretty sure they'll ship to the land of Can. ๐Ÿ™‚ But since you are up North, a quick Google search revealed a place called "Canada RAM":

http://www.ordersite.com/canadaram/macram.html

If you scroll down far enough, what you want is on the right, listed as "512Mb low profile" part # "50136" for $158.

hope this helps!

Hi Ed

Glad I could help. ๐Ÿ™‚

do you know if i can up-grade my powerbook G3 300mhz with 512 mb memory?

Yep, you sure can. I have a 300MHz Wallstreet (Powerbook G3) with 512MB on board. 256 in the upper slot and 256 in the lower. OWC sells that too-

link: http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=112&type=Memory&TI=%23TimeFor mat%28Now%28%29%2C&shoupgrds=ShowUpgrades

and I'm sure Canada Ram will too. Extra RAM definitely helps the old Wallstreet, even more than the clamshell, in my opinion. Be aware that the most current OS that is officially supported on the old Wallstreets is 10.2.8.

Anyhow, back to your clamshell iBook - what size of hard drive do you have in it?

OK - just checking to see if you have ample HD space for Tiger (you do), and trying to keep on topic. ๐Ÿ™‚ Depending on how you use your iBook, you may want a larger HD, but 10Gb will be more than enough to install Tiger + iLife + Photoshop Elements (2.0) and photos, and maybe a couple of games. That's what I had on my 10Gb drive. ๐Ÿ™‚ Of course, there really wasn't a lot of room for games after the photos and music were loaded...depending on how you plan on using yours, you may want to consider a HD upgrade.

cheers!

Richard:
I know that i am getting off the original topic, but...
you say that officially i can not upgrade my Lombard beyond 10.2.8 (jaquar or panther?)
unofficially, could one up-grade a Lombard or Wallstreet to Tiger???

thanks for all your help
I will probably buy some ram for my clamshell and my newer i-book from OWC - just wondering if it is worth buying ram for the Lombard

thanks again

Hi Ed

I think a Lombard can "officially" handle 10.3 (I don't own one, so I can't say for sure - I own the Wallstreet, which can only handle 10.2). The reason I say "officially" because there is a utility called XPostFacto which allows for the booting of OS X on "legacy" Macs; and should allow the running of 10.4 on machines that "officially" cannot support it. Link here:

http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/Framework.cfm?page=XPostFacto.htm l

Now, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) while using this utility, but XPF worked great for putting 10.3.9 on my Wallstreet. Unfortunately, I have not yet succeeded at installing Tiger 10.4, and I haven't figured out why yet. ๐Ÿ™‚ Whenever I try to install it, I wind up having to re-build my hard drive from scratch. Check out the website, and browse through the forums there, and there is a wealth of people much wiser than I about getting Tiger to run on an "unsupported machine".
