FCS 3. Is it worth the upgrade?

Hi,

I know from another thread on this forum it's more-or-less given that I can't use the new FCS on my G5. At present, I work only with SD projects, so have no need to make use the 'extended ProRes family'. What I'm trying to work out then, is whether for us SD people (TV news in the UK is still nearly all 16:9 SD) is there much to warrant parting with £250 for the FCS upgrade?

First on Final Cut 7. The blurb on the website talks of 'dramatic filters and effects'. How many of these are new? The alpha transitions look neat but can you not achieve pretty similar results with the current version by just flicking between FCP6 and Motion 3?

In Motion 4, I like the idea of a decent easy to use title scroll (hardly cutting edge) but that aside, my use of Motion is always pretty straight forward - titles and bullet point graphics in documentaries. I find Livetype so easy to use, I think it's a shame that isn't included in the new FCS. So what's great about Motion 4? Again the blurb talks about 'easy-to-use titling tools and intuitive interface in Motion 4' - I might be missing something, but the interface and tools don't look that much different form Motion 3. Again, 'breathtaking filters and effects'... are there heaps of new ones that are 'must haves'? (The master templates demo on the web pages promoting the new application, uses a template from Motion 3). Do the new templates cut it for those of us who just want to grab a well designed title sequence, tweak it a bit and go?

And.. does anybody know whether Soundtrack Pro 3 ships with new music beds and audio loops - i.e. added since the last version? I can't see anything on Apple.com and a post on the Soundtrack Pro forum remains unanswered.

Cheers,

Ant

Color STILL needs a complete rewrite.

I'm still yet to get into it extensively, but what about it needs work besides the GUI?

Final Touch 2K was designed to color correct DPXs natively. QuickTime support was hacked on, and then when Apple bought it they hacked more features on top. Color 1.5 tries to fix the side-effects of the previous hacks while adding more hacks to the mix. It's messy.

And then there's the other miscellaneous stuff like using weird non-standard preference files and requiring a very high screen resolution, unlike the other apps in the studio which scale nicely.
