"The backup disk image could not be mounted" - What do I do?

Hi - After faultless use for the last 3 months - over the last few days I have been getting the error message "The backup disk image could not be mounted" accompanied by an exclamation mark in the menu bar icon and a red failed in the system prefrences. Nothing has changed - ac restarting both mac and time capsule. Do I erase the time capsule and start again? Any suggestions. Can't seem to get this working again. Thanks as always.

Wow...I had a glimmer of hope when after doing these steps, but it eventually failed again. It actually looked like it was working as the backup was growing past 2GB (it usually doesn't go past 2MB when this problem pops up) but ended up with the same error:

"unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."

I'm not used to Apple products giving this much grief. 😟

Oh, and I do not have Mozy like some here, and am running 10.5.7.

Thought I would try to tie all this together & maybe the group-mind can come up with a solution.

My first posting about the Read Only problem : http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2109367&tstart=0

On a related (?) thread : http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9978822#9978822 some posters are suspecting either the 10.5.8 update or the Mozy backup service (one version in particular).

For the record: My ethernet connected machine will not backup to Time Capsule image, because it is now R/O. Disk Utility sez it cannot repair the image and just quits. Drive Genius says the same thing. Wireless backups from two other machines in house work just fine.

I am still using OS 10.5.7 on all machines. I do not use Mozy services at all.

Question: Can I erase/reformat just a single backup image on Time Capsule without disturbing the other backup images?

Currently backing up to a firewire drive with two other bootable partitions (just in case)

I am in the same exact position as you. Other machines backup wirelessly with no problem. Ethernet connected machine no longer backs up. 10.5.7 here as well.

The first time this happened to me, the effected machine was backing up wirelessly at the time so I don't think it's a connected/wireless issue. I deleted the entire backup for that machine (keeping the backups that belong to another machine) and started over. Worked great for a couple of months but is now broken again.

I think you have solved my problem! It never occured to me to simply DELETE the offending image. Jumped thru hoops trying to get DU to fix the problem, the tried to erase that image, even muttered VooDoo curses. No go!

Right now (after simply dragging the backup sparsebundle to the trash) it is on its way to performing a first time backup. Of course, this will take awhile but I do think that's done it.

Many thanks,

I just installed mine today.... And Will RETURN IT Monday...
I do think it is a "latest Leopard update issue" the reason I purchased the Time Capsule is because my 1.5 year old WD external I was using had time machine errors... which new [maybe] tells me it is an OS problem.... In any event, if I want head aches like this, I can go back to a Pee-See.....

I do love all three of my Macs.... though
