I have no sound after 10.5.8

I just upgraded to 10.5.8. I get the Mac startup sound when I boot, but then no sound whatsoever after that. No system sounds, movies, webpages, etc.

I have the first model of MacBook Pro. Any thoughts?

HI,

Just to make sure, open System Preferences/Sound and make sure your sound isn't muted.

Also, try deleting this file. com.apple.soundpref.plist

/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences.

Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

Also, try repairing disk permissions.

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

This looked to be the case for me as well, but open up System Preferences, go to Sound, and check the Output and Input again. After doing this, I too had no sound, but check Sound, and to my glee the Internal Speakers/Headphones (under Output), and Internal microphone (under Input) reappeared. I simply selected them and all is well. Let us know what you find there.

Nope, still no luck for me. I reinstalled the combo update, re-ran fix permissions and went in and out of the sound CP as suggested (input/output) and still no sound. Pretty limiting considering what I do for a living. I've not had a bad experience performing an update before, but this is a big one.

I also tried deleting the sound pref file to no avail. I guess I'll need to carve out even more time to call Apple to see how they can help.

Thanks for trying to help 🙂

Update: I was watching (and listening since my headphones work) a movie in iDVD and removed my headphones to see if the sound would transfer to my speakers. They didn't, but it's then that I noticed the red light coming from my headphone jack. Apparently it's not always lit. So, I then tried gently moving my headphone plug in and out of the jack (as recommended in this thread for this), and low and behold the sound came back to my laptop speakers. Whoo hoo!

Same here:
My sound went off and I got "no sound device available" on the pref pane for the first time few days after upgrading to 10.5.8.

The first time, rebooting restored sound. But it went off after 1/2 hour.

Rebooting or resetting the PRAM didn't do anything any more.

But using Onyx to clear audio caches (+reboot) did the job... for few hours. I did it up to 4 times...

The 5th time, I re-installed 10.5.8 from the combo installer, repaired authorizations, rebooted, and it worked for few more hours before sound disappeared again.

Last time, beboot has been enough... for how long?

Apple, this is clearly a bug! Is someone working on it?
