I have no sound after 10.5.8

I just upgraded to 10.5.8. I get the Mac startup sound when I boot, but then no sound whatsoever after that. No system sounds, movies, webpages, etc.

I have the first model of MacBook Pro. Any thoughts?

Solved. Installing the combo plus repairing permissions afterwards worked for me as well.

I also have this problem, have tried all the solutions recommended above, and it's still not working.
