Here's how to fix MPEG-2 Export in Tiger

This might have been posted before, but it's not easy to find so I figured I'd post the answer I just found out.

You will NEED a DVD Studio Pro 3 Installation Disk to do this. DVD Studio Pro 4 does **NOT** carry what is necessary to do this.

1. Go to Library / Quicktime and delete "QTMPEGExport.component" if it's there. Empty Trash.

2. Go to Syster / Library / Quicktime and delete "QTMPEGExport.component" if it's there. Empty Trash.

3. Download Pacfist from versiontracker.com.

4. Insert your DVDSP3 Installation Disk.

5. Open Pacifist and click "Open Package." Select "DVDStudioPro3.pkg" OR whatever reference file is available.

6. Search for "QTMPEGExport.component" by pressing Apple-F.

7. Extract "QTMPEGExport.component" to System / Library / Quicktime.

8. Verify your password and it's done!

Something about installing Tiger messes up the file, and QuickTime 7 might act a little funny while trying to export your movie. But THIS WORKS and it is FAST!!!! I just did it. I'm not a big fan of Compressor, especially after I was forced to use it since installing Tiger. I've always gotten better results out of QuickTime (which is sad considering).

Hope this helps someone!

You can't. DVDSP makes MPEG-2 files in order to author DVD's, and QT 7 (or 6 etc.) doesn't do that.

The easiest way is to make a DVD with Toast from the QT files, and when it is done (you can make just an image if you want) the files it made are in the Documents/Roxio Converted items as M2v and M1A video/audio streams. Or just rip the DVD (image or actual) with Mac the Ripper and you'd have all the VOB's which are just MEPG-2 files. Using Streamclip you can trim a VOB to get the part you want in MPEG-2.

If you make a DVD with iDVD same idea - when done you have the finished DVD with the VIDEO_TS folder and the VOB files to rip, the only disadvantage is the access to the source files is not as easy as in Toast. Plus IMHO Toast is faster as an MEPG-2 encoder.

AFAIK old versions had a QT MPEG2 encoding plugin bundled. I don't know whether it works with current systems.

iDVD stores the encoded M2V and AIF files inside its document package. They, too, can be muxed together as a MPEG file with MPEG Streamclip. Notice that iDVD deletes those files with some settings as soon as you stop the burning process so grab them before that occurs.

And Roxio does (deletes assets) as well - I should mention to go into Toast preferences and under converted media change that to "never" - you can press a button there whenever you want, to delete the media or just go into the folder and do it manually. Otherwise on a succesful burn it does it right away. Which is not what you would want if you are just using it to convert QT to MPEG.

Also for those who want lower strength MPEG the VCD setting makes MPEG-1 files and it has a SVCD setting as well.

Well not with a Toaster. That is a device to turn bread into toast, for eating.

Roxio Toast Titanium 6.1.1 on the other hand will take QT or DV files or iMovie projects and make DVD video from them and burn the DVD's. It has a very good, fast MPEG-2 encoder also will do MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 for the SVCD format.

If you follow the advice about not eliminating converted assets you also get a folder of M2V and M1A files which are the raw MPEG streams to play with , perhaps in MPEG Streamclip.

QT does not enter into it. It cannot export MPEG-2 at all.

If you have a ton of DV you can also buy the LaCie FastCoder which is a firewire connected hardware-based MPEG1/2 encoder which can encode DV to MPEG-2 in real time, e.g one minute DV is transcoded to 1 minute MPEG-2 in one minute. No software encoder can do that.
