Here's how to fix MPEG-2 Export in Tiger

This might have been posted before, but it's not easy to find so I figured I'd post the answer I just found out.

You will NEED a DVD Studio Pro 3 Installation Disk to do this. DVD Studio Pro 4 does **NOT** carry what is necessary to do this.

1. Go to Library / Quicktime and delete "QTMPEGExport.component" if it's there. Empty Trash.

2. Go to Syster / Library / Quicktime and delete "QTMPEGExport.component" if it's there. Empty Trash.

3. Download Pacfist from versiontracker.com.

4. Insert your DVDSP3 Installation Disk.

5. Open Pacifist and click "Open Package." Select "DVDStudioPro3.pkg" OR whatever reference file is available.

6. Search for "QTMPEGExport.component" by pressing Apple-F.

7. Extract "QTMPEGExport.component" to System / Library / Quicktime.

8. Verify your password and it's done!

Something about installing Tiger messes up the file, and QuickTime 7 might act a little funny while trying to export your movie. But THIS WORKS and it is FAST!!!! I just did it. I'm not a big fan of Compressor, especially after I was forced to use it since installing Tiger. I've always gotten better results out of QuickTime (which is sad considering).

Hope this helps someone!

This didn't work at first, but I figured it out. I had done a fresh install of Tiger and Final Cut Studio, but didn't upgrade. After reinstalling the QTMPEGExport.component, I got the MPEG2 export menu back, but would get a 'serialization error' message saying that DVD Studio Pro needed to be serialized before the MPEG export could be used. At first I couldn't understand, knowing that my new version was registered and working fine... I put the DVD Studio Pro 3 disc 'back' in and started the installer. After I got to the part where you enter your serial number (from version 3), I entered the info, but then quit the installer right after the serial was accepted. This seems to serialize the MPEG2 as well and works fine now.

I'm trying to do this same thing only with version 1.5 of DVD Studio Pro. MPEG-2 Export has worked just fine up until Tiger.
I got the same serialization thing as described and I get past that with the insertion of the DVDSP disk. Now I can get the menu option for MPEG2 export and the options work fine but when it actually goes to do the compression, it brings up the status dialog and shortly there after it unexpectedly quits.

My QTMPEGEXPORT.component is 326,944 Bytes in size, how big is yours?

Any Ideas?

You may only need to update your MPEG-2 Playback Component.
There are two versions (6.0 and 6.4) I believe.
Another issue is the core underpinning of QuickTime to the OS. Tiger requires version 7, which in turn, may force the user to use the Compressor app instead of exporting MPEG-2 using QT.
I'm using both version 6.5.2 and 7.0.2 QT Player apps on my Tiger machine. Some features not available in 7 still work when I run them through 6.5.2 (even though the "framework" is QT 7.
Funny how us Mac users avoid the unfamiliar. I never exported to MPEG-2 using QT. Now, because it is gone, I want it back. I use iDVD to create disk images or Toast to test the files.

After I used the fix above I discovered that there was, indeed, an update to the MPEG2 playback component. I believe that we are expected to also buy this update along with QT7. I could be wrong. The problem is just like when the 7 update came through and the fact that you would lose your PRO settings if you installed it was in the SMALL print.

I believe that Apple has been so used to their fanatical customers that they forget that a lot of us just think of them as machines we do business with.

EX: I bought a Powerbook on Dec 30th of last year. 10 days later, the iLife software bundled with it was upgraded. Even though my credit card bill for my $3000 laptop wasn't in yet. I was not eligible for the free upgrade.

Yes, it was only $40 or so, but hey, I paid 3Gs for the computer, you'd think they'd cough it up. When I went to the Apple Store to ask about it, I was told by a wide eyed employee that I MUST have known that there was a big Apple thingy happening in Jan and that the software would have an update. Like I don't have anything better to do with my time than keep track of the Apple Cult. I have a business to run.

The point being...

This is just another example of how out of touch with customers Apple is. We have to fend for ourselves. Applecare is worthless if you have a problem that is Off the Book. They spend the first part of your call trying to find a reason why they shouldn't have to help you.

They should have told us that there would be a change in how MPEG2 is handled with TIger and QT7. It doesn't cost them money to let us just know what we have to buy to keep things up to date.

I use Quicktime to render MPEG2 because the interface shows an approximate guess as to the final file size as you adjust the bit rate settings. I have no idea why compressor can't do this. I mean they already have the code, its in that QT interface. It is invaluable for a guy who doesn't have time to get his calculator out and start figuring out time, bit rates, and file size.

I cleaned off my hard drive and installed OSX Tiger. Then I installed Final Cut Studio software bundle. Shortly thereafter, ran software update. Got Quicktime 7. Now I find I don't have MPEG2 Component available. I found the installer, ran it. Installation failed. No specific error message. I tried someones fix of going to the .pkg file, opening contents - but didn't see a MPEG2 component file. Hmm.
Perplexed.
