.wmv files

You can play some WMV files (but not all) by using this freeware viewer. It is worth the download as it plays some other formats (most avi files) that QT will not play without downloading new decompressors.

Another choice is to try the Windows Media Player for Mac, available free from MicroSoft.

I have another question regarding .wmv files on the mac. I have some video files that are in a .wmv and I want to edit them with the imovie. How do I make them compatible?? Is there a way to change the format??

I haven't used any of the flip4mac products but the site I linked earlier in this thread says you can import WMV files into iMovie with Player Pro. They appear to have a demo version you could try out.

Player simply plays back WMV in Quicktime.
Player Pro allows you to edit WMV files in programs like iMovie or FCP. It also allows you to open the WMV in Quicktime and simply save it as a MOV file. I find that the easiest for editing.
Studio includes Player Pro and allows you to export WMV from iMovie, QuicktimePro, FCP, Compressor2.
Studio Pro includes 2 Pass encoding for better quality bit rate targeting and includes Player Pro.

Tiger no longer ships with Stuffit Expander. It is the only software that can open the .sit or .sitx formats.

You might (will) find the WMP for Mac is not that great with a lot of WMV files. Quite disappointing really since it is a MS codec and their player. Once you use even the $10 Flip4mac player plug in (allows playback but not exporting) you'll never use the MS player. And the $49 version allows quite exxcellent exports to QT formats so you don't even have to keep them in MWV at all.

The most expensive flip4mac allows you to export from QT to WMV. Not all that useful for mac users but might be important for Windows users you want to share with and who are too stubborn to download QT.

Thanks for the info in this thread! It answered my question as well, which was how to play .wmv files on my new iMac. Decided to download the $10 Flip4Mac thingy, and it works great. Plays .wmv files just fine when I encounter them on the Web.

I get a .wmv file in my mail. I click it, and iTunes opens. What do I do to get the file to go to my windows media program instead of iTunes?

I am also having problems with many video files. I cannot seem to play wmv files along with many other types. I have windows media player, quick time, real palyer and vlc.
In the case of wmv files in Media Player it says 'Cannot open the file. Verify that the path and filename are correct and try again.' It happens with every wmv I have downloaded.

on the new INTEL DUO CORE mac - i have this problem too -
and FLIP4MAC did reply to me by email telling me they're working on their software to get it compatible for the INTEL DUO CORE but no ETA, maybe not until Spring ...

ANY OTHER IDEAS? I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM! CAN'T PLAY WMVs and I seem to get ALOT of them in emails .....

I think I've found the right discussion. I am NEW to this- have a new Intel i-mac, am lost as to what to do to open wmv files sent to me in e-mail. There seems to be conflicting advice on what to download to get this to work. Is microsoft media player the first step? Any help appreciated. Thanks.
