Macbook Pro Wireless Connection Problems

I bought my 13 inch macbook pro 1 week ago and I've had wireless connection problems from day 2 (I think after the updates).
Problems include:
- Safari cannot connect to the internet for 5~10 minutes after I turn it on, whether it be from sleep mode or completely off or restart (the fastest connection I got after turning it on was about 40 seconds)
- Loading takes ridiculously long and eventually Safari cannot find the server
- Airport signal (on the top right hand corner) is always full when it is not working
- Sometimes internet works but it is ridiculously slow

However, when the wireless connection stabilizes, Airport Signal is 2~3 bars full and internet works SOOO well and I love it so much when it does. But the problem is that it stabilizes like 30 minutes to never after I turn it on and it makes me so mad I want to explode this piece of crap in the microwave.

So I've called apple support, and they made me try four things:
1. Reset modem, router, and computer
2. Delete caches, reset Safari
3. Putting Airport first on the Service Order and resetting DHCP Lease
4. Connecting with Ethernet Cable then resetting the computer

None of these worked, and I'm suspecting that the cause of the problem is the hardware (not the aluminum body that's just bs) because my router and modem are working fine (my other samsung laptop is working perfectly). I don't think the problem lies in my network settings either because I did exactly what the Apple technicians told me to do. So after Appleguy made me try all 4 of those diagnostics, he told me to contact my router company NETGEAR because he thinks nothing is wrong with the mac hardware, so I did. The NETGEAR lady told me if one laptop is working and another isn't, there is nothing wrong with the router. So if nothing is wrong with my hardware, software, router, modem, ISP... Why do I have wireless issues????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'm going to return this <edited by host> or get another one with my warranty

donv- this suggestion does not work for MBP's that were purchased recently, such as mine, and it is only for the problem when running on battery power. i believe most of us are experiencing the problem

I have run out of ideas on this, and idk if Apple is even aware of this problem. has anyone contacted them and asked if they know about this?

What i have done this morning was re-install my OS back to 10.5.7, as well as rolled back my airport express firmware to 7.5.1. So far so good, but its only been about 2 hours. I have not yet experienced a complete internet stoppage as i was before, but i have experienced slowdowns which i think are unrelated to the problems we've been having because during these slowdowns (such as downloading files) the computer is still receiving information, whereas during the slowdowns before the re-install, the computer was NOT receiving any information.

So we'll see.

Update

The problem is still occurring, now even worse. Earlier i was only experiencing slowdowns, however now after doing a complete erase and re-install yesterday, my computer is losing connectivity completely from the airport express. Another phone call to apple resulted in my explaining the problem AGAIN, and that now it may be a hardware issue resulting from the latest firmware update. She tried to tell me that it was possibly a loose connection or some other hardware problem which i quickly had to shoot down because there's no way that everyones airport became loose at the same time. Anyway, apparently re-installing your OS doesn't roll back the firmware, and only sending it back to apple can solve the problem. (i wouldn't dare take it to a genius, at least not here in NYC). So now the computer is going to go back to apple, where like an auto mechanic, fixing one problem will create several more. I look forward to the coming years with my mac spending more time being sent back and forth to apple rather than in my home.

I bought my macbook Pro YESTERDAY and I have yet to be able to connect to the wireless network at my apartment. Initially, I thought it was my wireless network. However, my printer is able to connect to the network. My computer says it is connected to wireless but it has a self-assigned IP address. I am able to get internet through the eternet cable but not wireless. I have tried the diagnostic test as well as deleting the airport and then creating a new one. However, nothing has work so far. Any suggestion?

Just to add my voice to the rest. I'm having the same issues. After updating 10.5.8 my network at the office on my unibody MacBook Pro goes in and out consistently. I have a SMB wireless router at the office. My house works great, as i have a TimeCapsule and never loses connectivity. I just moved offices right after the 10.5.8 update. So i thought maybe my new office was the problem. But i'm closer to the router here and have a 10% higher connection (according to iStumbler). I've restarted the wireless router, changed the switch it runs into, replaced the cable, and more. Only to anger the PC laptop users in the office, as they are having no issues.

It has to be an issue related to the 10.5.8 update on non-Apple wireless routers. I'm glad to see i'm not going insane. I'll just have to switch to wired until this issue is resolved. And my MacBook Pro is too new for the "only on battery" fix issue.

I'm having major problems aswell.

My unibody MacBook Pro (12 months old) and an older 15" one my sister has both have problems since 10.5.7 (intermittently) and 10.5.8 (constantly)

When restarting from sleep, airport icon on menu bar greyed out and network not available. Sees neighbours networks, but not my Airport Extreme, nor my sisters Belkin.

Further, when I take mine to work, it always connects to my work Netgear wireless router without issue.

Bring it home, and will not connect to my base station, and my network is not even in the list.

Work fine with direct ethernet cable.

Have called Tech Support, but they were unable to help with any fixes. Said it was a known issue and wait a few days and there might be an update.

My iMac, macmini, appleTv and iPhone have no problems whatsoever - only the macbook pro.

To get connected, I have to go to network preferences, delete my network from the airport tab, re-enter network, restart and it usually works, though sometimes have to do it twice.

Very frustrating, especially when I know its specific to macbook pro and only started with 10.5.7 and has only gotten worse

You'd think Apple would know by know what the problem is...

Okay so let me add my self to this list as well.
I recently picked up a Refurbished 13" MacBook Aluminum Unibody from apple.com

So currently I have:
15" Unibody MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz - 10.5.8 (original OS 10.5.6) just updated yesterday to 10.5.8 (late 2008)

- 17" Unibody MacBookPro 2.66Ghz Early 2009 Model (Original OS 10.5.6) just updated to 10.5.8 TODAY

- 13" MacBook Unibody 2.0Ghz (original OS 10.5.6) just updated to 10.5.8 today

Other Devices:
1TB Dual-Band Mid-2009 Time Capsule
Linksys Cable Modem

===========================================================================

15" UMBP has absolutely no issues getting a signal to the AirPort -> TimeCapsule
From cold boot to start up it connects fine and no issues.
waking from sleep to full on activity connects and am able to contec tot my time capsule, back up via time machine, transfer files over the net

17" uMBP - So i just updated today to 10.5.8 using the Combo Updated (LIKE I DID ON ALL SYSTEMS) and it was working just perfectly fine prior to this update.
I have the 17" connected to an Apple 30" so i went to unplug it from there so i can work mobile.
The system went into sleep mode after it was done downloading some files, i wake it from sleep the Airport Icon is fully connected, i click the drop down icon and itjust shows my Closed network there and it doesnt even scan for other wireless connections (there are only 2 others in the neighborhood and they have no interference with ours).
So i discover it wasnt connecting to the internet tried both safari and firefox.
I went to restart; to no avail SAME THING as above.
So i plug it back into the charger, plug the display back in shut the lid (so i can get the main and only display as the 30") and i open it as it went into sleep mode and it idd it again.
I can see the other MacBook sin the side bar of Finder and the Time Capsule but I cannot actually access them just sits and spins the cogwheel.

13" Unibody Macbook - Same exact thing as the 17" unibody.

some solutions; I used the 15" to restart the Time Capsule device as I was unable to restart it via the AirPort Utility on either the 13 or 17".
then after that i could use the 13 and 17 to connect online and access files fine for the most part.

This never had happened until today, I think it altered a hardware setting or something as even when using a back up bootable clone of 10.5.7 on either the 17 or 13 it reproduces the same predicament.

There is no wireless interference, these are ALL UNIBODY revisions of the MacBookPro and never had a connectivity issue until now.

Ive done all the steps imaginable; Reset PRAM, Safeboot, Permissions Repair, etc etc.
Updated the Time Capsule firmware 7.4.2 restored it to 7.4.0 etc no avail there.

Any luck or ideas? thanks!!

I just had this problem on my 10.5.7 UMBP 17". The problem was with both ethernet and wireless, on all the networks I tried.

It seemed to be a pure DHCP problem, where the Macbook would not accept any DHCP data from the router. When I entered the IP, Subnet mask and Router IPs, I could access the router by its IP, and ping other IPs on the internet, but I had no nameserver access.

As a last resort, I tried resetting the SMC (as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411), and everything is now back to normal.

On a side note, I probably should have sussed this out to be a systemic problem, as all network connectivity also was lost in my Windows partition.

Hi,

I was having trouble with the wireless on my Macbook Pro as well. The wireless worked everywhere else but at home. When at home my other computers (PCs) worked and my Ipod Touch worked with wireless as well. The Macboook would show all four bars and say it was connected to the internet and would assign a IP address but the internet would not come up consistently; kept dropping, was very slow, or would not come up at all. The internet worked when I connected by ethernet. I found out that it was the encryption method I was using with the router. I had a setup access list and then switched to WEP and neither worked. When I switched to WPA the internet came up and has stayed up.
