Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Is a Time Capsule's hard drive user-replaceable? Will Apple do it?

I need some concrete answers-preferably with a link to official documentation or from an official rep here in the forums-on what my options are when a Time Machine's hard drive dies. Yes: when, not if. Hard drives die, I don't care how "server grade" they are.

I've searched the forums, I've called Apple a couple of times, and I've asked a few store reps. No one can give me a real answer. This may be a good sign of the reliability of Time Capsule drives so far, but I want to know my options.

Is the drive user-replaceable? Will replacing it myself void my warranty? Will an Apple Store do it under warranty or for a nominal fee? I'm not dropping $500 every couple of years when a drive that will get as much action as the one inside a Time Capsule spins its last cycle.

Thanks in advance for any help. I really want a Time Capsule, but not finding any information on this important aspect of owning a hard drive is becoming frustrating.

Mine just died after 18 months. After reading that Apple won't repair them, I opened up the case. These things are very poorly designed. There's a blower fan that has no vent - the rubber 'sole' is covering what little holes there are in the metal plate that the fan is attached to. It's really absurd.

The power supply itself looks like someone's final project from electronics 101. In a stark contrast to the logic board (and every other Apple innard I've ever seen) the thing looks sloppily hand-soldered and it's covered in big gobs of glue, which would make repair unnecessarily difficult. It should be a simple matter to pull the handful of capacitors off of the board, test them with an ohm meter, and then get a replacement for the blown one from Radio — er, um — The Shack for 89¢, but it seems like they've deliberately sabotaged it with the excess glue.

It's almost like they had the MobileMe team build the power supplies.

Anyway, if anyone finds a way to get a hold of a replacement power supply (or if someone would with a working unit be so kind as to provide a pinout of the non-standard connector that attaches the power supply to the logic board — you may need it yourself in the future) it would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with the excessive glue comments.
Mine died this morning and I can't believe you can't literally buy (even through a service agent) a power supply. It's easier to take out than the drive.

I replaced the two bulging caps that seemed to causing the problem, but it still didn't light up unfortunately.

Oh well..... having second thoughts about getting another....

If anyone knows were to get a power supply for one of these, I'd be very happy.

Regards,
Matt
