(This post also appears over in the MacBook Air Forums)
I’m having a problem even the Apple Product Specialists can’t figure out and am hoping someone here can think of something that might help.
I bought an Air in July and set it up successfully with my old Dell monitor and external speakers (headphone jack). In Sept I bought the Apple 24” LED display (from now on called display). A couple of days after setting it up, the display’s speaker’s started to make a horrible noise. Kind of like a blown amp; kind of like bad radio static. Happens with both audio streamed through Firefox and music played from my iTunes library. Once it starts, it doesn’t stop. The only way to fix it is to go to System Preferences>Sound and toggle over to internal speakers and immediately back to display usb audio. It is instantly repaired and fine again for another day or so. You can hear the audio through the static, but not very clearly. The Air is powered through the display and the display is plugged into a UPS.
To date we have tried:
3 displays - all same problem
2 Airs - same problem
Disconnected all peripherals leaving Air and display only - same problem
Wiped the drive and reinstalled the system - same problem
Tested the house power at the outlet - 120 volts
Purchased brand new APC UPS with line conditioning - same problem
Connected external USB speakers - works fine
My system is pretty simple: bluetooth keyboard, usb mouse, wireless printer, Western Disgital usb drive for Time Machine and a ScanSnap Scanner. The problem happens with or without these connected and with just Thunderbird, FireFox and Adium installed (along with the Apple apps). I can't create it on demand, so taking the Air and Display to a Genius Bar won't help (unless they keep both and listen to audio for a day or two).
I’ve spent about 50 hours (not kidding, really) working with Apple to diagnose this and we haven’t come up with anything. I googled everything I could think of and searched these forums. The software folks in my life are stumped but think it might be some kind of buffer since it takes a while to create and can be instantly “cleared” by switching speakers.
Right now I still have both of the Airs that I can use for testing. If anyone can think of something for me to try, I’d sure appreciate the help. I really don’t want to end up with a $900 monitor whose built-in speakers I can’t use. Thanks in advance
