best way to import fotomagico show to iDVD (iLife 09)

Hi guys, familiar question I'm sure.

Using iDVD (iLife 09) to make a DVD to be played on NTSC 16:9 TV screen
I created the template in iDVD (menus, intro movie etc..), but the main "feature" is a slideshow that I created using FOTOMAGICO.

Now my question is how to get the best quality onto the DVD (knowing that there are NTSC limitations of quality) ?

What format/settings should I save the slideshow in FOTOMAGICO? (HD 1080p? Quicktime? NTSC-DV ? Frame rates? etc.. any details you could provide would be helpful)

Next I need to import it to iDVD. How then should I save the DVD using iDVD for best quality?

Thanks for any suggestions. I wish there was a direct export to iDVD from fotomagico, but there isn't that I can tell.

So after reviewing 12 outputs on my TV, i chose the best of the best, and re-encoded them using some tweaks.

I took your suggestion and tried AIC again and now it seems to have encoded succesfully without the green bars..

On dpreview forums, I learnt that I could add chapter marks to my videos using garageband, without the need to re-encode a second time.. (information that would have saved me many many hours!)

so i tried a few samples of that as well..
ironically though, i found that certain movies processed in imovie came out better than the equivalent format straight from fm.

anyway, i should have tonight a final answer and decision!
(iDVD is taking 2-3 hours to encode a 16 minute movie.. crazy)

Will be curious to see what you end up with. I set up various workflows this am where I have the FM>QT 1090p output file>straifght to toast dvd, straight to idvd, straight to imovie

Then testing from imovie the various export options - to toast, to idvd etc.

Have not worked and setup all the permetuations yet - will then burn the disk.

Finally had to reduce my test file as well. 30 slides as a test took too long. Down to 12(the ones that will let me see the majority of issues across the 500)and will redo the base image using the fm>qt workflow I identified last nite and go from there.

And when all this is done we need to document and post somewhere - cause darn if this doenst get asked and often with no responses. I know those with pro apps - fe etc and those that spend their days doing this probably figured it out - however with apps like FM/idvd etc - there is a need for the advanced user to be able to do this and have instructions. It really is amazing how little information is available regarding the use of these products in these types of workflows!

ThereseF,

Whats your verdict??

Im having a heck of a time with iDVD now.
I made about 12 short movie clips, each about 20 seconds, in various different formats , for testing.
I imported them all into a iDVD project, so that I can see each of these qualities on one disc.

Its taking about 3-4 hours to encode this project in iDVD !! For about 10 mins of video..
PLUS, near the very end, I'm getting Multiplexing error, layerbreak handling before formatting.. sigh, im just trying to save to a disk image! this is my 4th attempt now (4x4hrs=16hrs wasted) ..
getting very fed up with idvd

Have you tried going straight into toast with it? Assuming you dont need the menus/themes that idvd offers....take the FM>QT 1080p or FM>HD 1080movie and pick it up in toast. Honestly - for DVD files I do not think you will see any more degredation than you did in iDVD. It might be a smidgen better as the file sizes tend to be a bit larger.

You will be limited to the toast themes/menus - but just try a trial burn. Mine looked pretty good. But now I loaded up so many variables and so many "short" movies I am hours into it before it stops encoding/burning.

Try about 10-12 slides(for me thats about 90 seconds) - anything less and I do not get a good feel for file size etc. Also need certain types of slides to check for pq(pic quality).

This should give you a pretty good feel.

Both of your macs not working under iDVD?

SURVEY SAYS...

Ok, so I've previewed about 30 different clips in different formats.
General observations:
AIC codec - not good, too much artifact
HD1080p - very clear, but also too much artifact
HD720p - more blurred compared to 1080p, but smooth, no artifact
H.264 - best of both worlds.. have the definition of 1080p, and just slightly more artifact compared to hd720p.

So the winner is : FM -> export to quicktime (h.264 codec, 1920x1080 size)
import to iMovie, chapters -> export to quicktime (h.264 codec)
import to iDVD, burn

Hope this helps.. i have huge excel sheet with all the data, but this is the conclusion..
For future (gasp) projects, I will definately explore using GARAGEBAND to put chapter markers in lieu of iMovie, skip a second encoding. My preliminary tests shows that it slightly adds some artifacts, but more investigation is needed.

Mike, Hmmm...I tried that codec and thought is was too many artifacts. But that was the one where I had the aspect ratios wrong. Could you please detail all the settings you used for the export to QT from FM.

So if I get the workflow correct - you then imported into imovie and exported using the same codec....could you also identify which settings you used there for the export?

Did you also try this without theimport intoo iMovie? If you did - was it better/worse/same after going to imovie instead of directly to iDVD? Did you try this workflow bypassing iDVD and going to toast? Was there any difference if you did?

Not asking that you do all these tests:) - Just wanted the info if you did.

Anyways - if you coul ddetail the FM/iMOVIE QT settings used (all the parmenters checked, unchecke detc) that would be brilliant. I want to try and replicate. Pretty much your findings echo mine - so feel we are on the right track and that codec if I have the correct QT parameters might be the ticket for the dvd encode/burn.

Thanks and COngrats!!!!!! Finally!!!!

It's really down to a judgment call at this point. So many similar results, I just picked what I felt was best.
There were only two major workflows to choose from at the end
FM (HD 720p) -> imovie (H.264)
- this produced an extremely soft and smooth video with no discernable artifact
but the i found it lacked sharpness
FM (H.264) -> imovie (H.264)
- has the definition and sharpness, is a little less 'smooth' running compared to the 720p, and shows slightly more artifact, but i felt the added quality was worth it

Here are the settings I used
FM -> export quicktime, size 1920x1080, pixel ratio 1:1, framerate 29.97fps, motion blur, customize->settings; compression h.264, frame rate: current, key frame: every 24; frame reordering : yes, quality: BEST, encoding: BEST data rate: auto

Imovie -> Share Export using quicktime -> Settings, and use the same as FM listed above.

I don't know if its placebo or not, but I definately found that after a 2nd encoding via imovie, for some formats, it actually improves!

My FM is now encoding my 46minute slideshow using the above settings, it says time remaining: 16 hours 41 minutes... god help me.. HOW could it possibly take that long?

Aug 11, 2009 6:42 PM in response to mikeypas

Your scaring me:) My FM project will be about 48 minutes...I may have to let it run the weekend!

Thanks for the settings. Did you check deinterlace? (This was under settings)And when you picked the size on the size tab - did you pick 1920 * 1080 HD or the HD 1920 *1080 16:9? Did you leave the rest of the values blank on that tab?

You and I had the same findings for the HD720/HD1080p.....Hence why I still am working is. So gonna try the h.264 settings and running trough imovie and will go from there. The test I ran using the aic from the file i created last nite had too much artifacting in anything but blu ray. So they are a no go for standard dvd. Same findings as you...So figure I am gonna skip any more testing and just follow what you have done:)

Seriously - someone else has to have gone through all this. I have scoured the net and the lack of info is astonishing and I am not all that happy with FM for not providing any info - well just had to get that off my chest.

Back to encoding and burning. Then I have to fininsh the slideshow. Just was so despondent when I got to 40 minutes and it finally dawned on me that no one outside of myself would see what I am seeing!- that I had had to go and see if I could make this mess worth even viewing.

Interesting re the imovie re encoding - gonna try that one too:) Why not - have come this far!!!

Aug 11, 2009 7:13 PM in response to wpwj40e

Yes, definately agree that some re-encoding by imovie can help the situation. Ie. HD 720p from fm , re-encoded using QT H.264 by imovie, looks better than HD 720p alone. weird.

I actually never went into the size tab to change any settings. so de-interlace was left off. and the dimensions were correct from the first screen, so no need to go into size tab

we definately are getting similar results..
I'm doing a fm export to HD 1080P (for playback only on a computer) on my laptop, its taking 3 hours.
on my imac, im doing a export to QT h.264 (but i selected motion blur, which was probably a mistake). its gonna take 16 hours.. i never found the motion to be jerky on my TV so maybe its unnecessary.

looking forward to hearing about your final result

Aug 11, 2009 10:56 PM in response to mikeypas

Not taking motion blur in is a mistake - so you are fine. My tests without it were really horrible. Its now taking 1.26 hours per FM encode and 36 minutes for idid for 3.16 minutes. So I am running horribly slower. Have now split the work between my two macs just to improve speed. I agree so far h.264 is pretty good. The re encoding from imovie is interesting. I am having other folks over to view cause I think I may be jaded. To date all re encoding from imovie - either aic or h.264 is being viewed positively from the idvd only.

Blu ray wins hands down but thats to be expected. The unfortunate part is the blu ray raw file from FM is a great file - but just stinks when re encoded via any source (idvd, imovie, toast) for dvd.

Agree re the hd 720 - too soft. Sinks up with my initial burns and results. Same with hd 1080 - too many artifacts - awaiting the final burns (wish it didnt take as long) for the last results - but ultimately think its the same as you have found. There are too many artifacts to my way of thinking for even h.264 - but my audience is receiving them better than me. SO will probably opt fort these - unfortunately given the burn times I am still a good 8 hours away from all the burns. Even with only 3 minutes - these are taking awhile!!!

BY tomorrow - will have the final results. Just wish it didnt take almost a day to get there!

Good! We are in agreement! 🙂 It's nice to have a consensus, and especially great to be going through this with someone who is in the same boat as me.

Regarding motion blur - I really didnt notice it being bad without it, but like i said i am trying it with. It nearly triples the time though...

I'm wondering about the encoding speeds? what mac do you have? i have g5 imac with 4gb ram. The 46 minute fm slideshow encoding to h264 with motion blur is taking 16 hours and thats just the rendering video part. It will still need to compress video (which is usually longer than render, then i still need to re-encode it with imovie, then re-encode it in iDVD. at this rate i dont know if itll be ready in time 😟

on my macbook (2ghz, 2gb ram, older intel core duo), fm to HD MOVIE 1080P is taking 3.5hrs to render, and 5.5hrs to encode.

how are you getting such fast speeds?

Karsten, unfortunately to make room, i deleted my little test files. I'm wondering if you could explain to me what improvements you had in mind?
