Can't Print after 10.5.8 update - HP 6310 + G5

I updated the G5 to 10.5.8 last night. Can't print today.

Everything is plugged in and connected.
The printer was "published."
I reset the printing services.
The printer no longer shows up as an option to add in the Preferences pane.
HP has no updated drivers.

Here is the error code that was on the published page:
"fatal: Opening Printer Connection Failed: Unable to open the printer connection. Please check your printer connections and check for printer errors."

When connected directly to the printer, the MacBook (10.5.6, Intel) CAN print.

Sounds like 10.5.8 broke something... Any suggestions?
TIA =)

Hi there,

There has been another postee getting the same message as you when connecting to a share. Have a look at this article.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2112054&tstart=15

Before I responded to him I checked that I was still able to connect to a USB share, and I found that the 10.5.8 did not stop my share from working. The only thing was that both of my Mac's were at 10.5.8 - don't know if that could have anything to do with it?

FTR - I don't think the driver would stop the share from appearing. Given that you cannot see the advertised printer in the default browser view, it is like the Bonjour service has stopped from the sharing machine. If you open Safari and select Bonjour within your bookmarks, is the printer shown in this view?

Sharing is not the issue.

The HP 6310 printer is plugged directly into the G5 Tower running 10.5.8. The printer doesn't appear as an option in the preferences pane when I try to add it or in Bonjour.

This set up worked fine prior to 10.5.8 update. (The G5 tower shared the printer to the MacBook)

When plugging the printer directly into the Intel MacBook running 10.5.6, the printer works fine. It appears in the preferences pane to add.

It looks to me like a clear case of an update breaking a functional set up.

How do I roll the G5 tower back to 10.5.7 or 10.5.6 - Do I need to start from scratch and reinstall Leopard? UGH!

Hi,

I have the same issue, any application collapse when trying to print a document.
Sympthoms are: In Safari, Pages, Preview, anything, by going to File -> Print
the result is the application hang automatically launch the crash report, to send back to apple.

I first tried 2 days ago with the Software Update containing the HP Printing Drivers Update and anything happen.
My second attemp was the security update of this morning and anything happen.
Finally I followed the pragmatic approach of removing my HP PSC 1510 All in one printer from the System Preferences -> Print & Fax and then to add it again. It automatically selects the version 5 of the printing driver and after that single delete / add operation looks like I can print again from all applications.

I am really not sure if this will work with other printers, or in a shared environment, the funny thing was, that I could not print from my MacPro Server but I could print through my MacBook Pro laptop sharing the printing attached to the server. Terrible slow but it could print.

I hope this tip can help somebody.
Regards,

H

I do not know whether this will help or not. I was also having difficulty, but had more variables in the mix, such as a new wireless router, etc.

What might have helped was turning everything off, restarting everything after running disk repair permissions. Seemed that "old" stuff might lay around in the system, that was causing difficulty, or and also choosing "default" for the printer when trying to add.

I am running an old 6MP HP printer — off an Appletalk network, so support is really tough. Keep thinking I am going to have to retire the whole subsystem, but after a few hours of futzing with stuff, finally got it working again. 🙂
