iphone switch into "headphone mode" mid-call

hope someone can help. a few times in the last few days my iphone, in the middle of a call, will go from regular "phone" mode into thinking I have headphones in.. when i DON'T, and thus it kinda ends the call as I can no longer hear who I'm talking to and they can't hear me. it's happen twice now in the middle of business calls... VERY frustrating.

I've tried putting a jack into the headphone port, and that worked once, but hasn't worked consistently. I've blown into the port thinking there might be dust in there, but that doesn't seem to help. and just as randomly, after the call has ended and I put the iphone down.. it randomly clicks back as if reverting back to regular mode, unassisted.

any thoughts out there?
thanks,
tom

Sounds like you should reinstall the firmware on the iPhone. Be sure to sync your iPhone and do a manual backup (right click on the iPhone icon on the left pane in iTunes and select Backup) and also a Transfer of Purchases (right click on the iPhone icon on the left pane in iTunes and select Transfer Purchases). As long as iTunes doesn't screw anything up, all your data should be backed up now. On the main screen for the iPhone in iTunes there is a Restore button, click that and follow all the prompts. After the restore, have iTunes restore your backup and then re-sync your iPhone to reinstall all your apps, music, videos, etc.

Let me know how that works for you. If that doesn't work, then I would take it into Apple and have them look at it.
