iTunes 8.2.1(6) randomly starts playing music

Haven't seen this, but since I've updated to the current version of iTunes, my player randomly will start playing music.

Basically, if iTunes is running with no song playing, within a couple of hours, it will start playing the last song I was playing.

This only started after the last update I put on this weekend.

You can add me to this list. iTunes is open, doing nothing... suddenly it starts playing whatever song/playlist was last selected. It also stops randomly for me too. It's only happening on my new iMac (though I don't really use iTunes on my MacBook Pro). At first I thought it was responding to one of the Apple Remotes, but I disabled the IR sensor and it's still happening. It's even happening in a fresh user account on my machine. Very weird.

I'm having the same problem. This is in iTunes 9.0.1 on 10.6.1. Does anybody else use an iTunes controller? I use GimmeSomeTune, but even when it isn't running I'm having this problem. I'm going to try deleting it from my computer and repair disk permissions to see if that fixes it. I never had this problem before iTunes 9.0.1. Oh, one other thing I've done is move my iTunes music folder to the root level of the hard drive and then put an alias to it in my music folder. I do this so that it isn't backed up daily (not my personal computer). Has anybody else moved their iTunes music folder to some location other than the default location? I've had it set up like this since iTunes 8 and it never made a difference before.

Well, it hasn't started on its own in a few days now. Unfortunately, I wasn't completely scientific in trying to figure out when it happens (I changed multiple things at the same time). I stopped using GimmeSomeTune. I also use USB Overdrive 3.0.1. I specifically created an entry for iTunes and then unchecked the Enabled checkbox, effectively allowing me to use USB Overdrive for everything except iTunes. The one other thing I did was specifically click on the heading for Music in the Library section on the lefthand side of the main iTunes window. The songs it had been playing on its own in the past were in some of the playlists I created. I've had those playlists for quite some time, updated through multiple versions of iTunes. Perhaps I need to delete them and create new playlists directly in iTunes 9.0.1. So I guess the moral of the story for me is, if you have any sort of input managers, try disabling them and see if that helps. If the problem presents itself to me again, I'll come back and let you know.

Add one more to the list. I've just seen this in the past week or so, iTunes 9.01 Additionally, I've been having problems when I use the keyboard shortcut (cmdopt+ctrleject) to shutdown my unibody macbook will reboot instead. (Yes, I'm sure I'm holding all the keys, it's very reproducible)... No clue if they could be related. I don't have any 3rd party agents running except my Logitech Mouse and Lexmark printer (had both before the problems started).

Same problem on my MacBook. I don't really know since when iTunes has played music at random (I guess one of the 8.x-versions).
Since I've installed Snow Leopard iTunes not only starts playing at random, but also launches without me doing anything.

Perhaps this issue is related to the one discussed in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2122639&tstart=0

If so, it might be a physical problem. (--> defective contact of the play/pause-key?)

(Please excuse my bad English.)
