"iTunes Library file cannot be saved". What is this all about?

At regular intervals, when using iTunes, I will click on something, for example the search box and a box will appear saying "the iTunes Library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough privileges for this operation". Can anyone tell me what this is all about? It doesn't seem to have any adverse effect, but it is very annoying.

If so then I wonder if there is a conflict between Indexing and the VC Real Time Scanner where one can be active at a time but not both.

This is what I am thinking, perhaps as the itunes library files are trying to be written in the directory the real time scanner is trying to scan the file while the indexing program is trying to index the file at the same time. causing the library files to be locked down in the process.

I wonder how we can apple to add this information to the KB?

One possibility is submitting a bug report via the iTunes feedback form:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

I can also make Knowledge Base suggestions through the "Knowledge Base Article Suggestions" forum in the Lounge. (It's a forum accessible here only to level 4 users and above, I'm afraid.) That's a bit hit and miss in terms of whether and when action gets taken, though (it depends on who's watching it).

If you're *level 2* and above, you can create *user tips*, such as the ones we find here:

http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=599

So I might start work on one of those next week. (I'm trying to avoid posting 24/7 on the forums at the moment, and it's the weekend at the moment here in New Zealand ...)

Otherwise, it's a matter of doing what we can here in the forums ... replying to people if we see the symptoms.

If you want to monitor changes in the Knowledge base documents, this page can be useful:

... and this RSS feed might be handy:

Hello all

I have recently found something that helps with this problem.

Basically, Windows will disconnect Mapped Drives after a period of inactivity and then reconnect as needed.

In my case I have my library files and media stored on a NAS which is then accessed via a Mapped Drive within iTunes and when Windows disconnects the Mapped Drive the link between iTunes and the Mapped Drive is lost resulting in the 'iTunes Library file cannot be saved' error.

The following command will stop Windows from disconnecting Mapped Drives:

net config server /autodisconnect:-1

I have succesfully tested this command on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Hope this helps others.

Bye for now

I am not an iTunes expert and could really use the help. I had the 'iTunes Library file cannot be saved' message after installing iTunes 9 on a newly built Windows 7 64 bit platform. Google led me to this thread.

I firstly stopped the iTunes files from being indexed, and the message disappeared. OK - that's good. As a precaution, I also excluded the iTunes folder from being included in the virus sweep by NOD32 - all the same.

Now, don't get me wrong, everything "appears" to work OK. For instance, I can download music from the iTunes store, and import from a CD no problem. I can synce my iPod classic, and the music appears when running iTunes and also on the iPod. Great!

But....and this is where I am puzzled... if I navigate to the Music folder via..'username'>My Musics>iTunes>iTunes media, I can see all of my music EXCEPT anything new that has been purchased or imported. E.g. (music tastes aside), I imported Michael Buble CD "Crazy Love". Now I can play that from within iTunes and play it on my iPod BUT it does not exist in the iTunes Media folder amongst everything else.

I would have thought that as this is the default location for storing the music and that's where iTunes get its from, I should be able to find it there and let, say, Windows Media Centre access it too. But no, just everything else.

I should mention that I imported music onto the new build using one of the commercially available programs that lets you move it from one PC to another using the iPod. This worked fine. I am thinking that this mysterious problem, as well as the original error message about 'Library file cannot be saved', are more Windows 7, or Windows 7 64 bit related.

If anyone can solve/explain this to me, I would be realy grateful!

Thanks
Bryan

Bryan, yours is a totally separate issue. But good to know turning off indexing helped someone else!

+I imported music onto the new build using one of the commercially available programs+
This other program must have put files somewhere besides the default itunes folders.

In itunes, go to one of those Michael Buble songs, right-click > Show in Windows Explorer.
That will show you where it is on your hard drive.

Katrina - Marry me!
I did as you said, and found that nested amongst the music files, there was another folder called 'Music' and everything including the missing files appears to be in there. Dang! (as you may say on your side of the Atlantic) - Problem solved.

Its been bugging me for a while, and now I know. A million thanks to you (and a very Happy New Year).
