User unknown in local recipient table

I have some of my mail users getting this error:

(reason: 550 5.1.1 <<user1@domain.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table)

It also comes in this form:

Action: failed
Status: 5.6.0
Diagnostic-Code: x-unix; user1: Mailbox does not exist

user1 and domain.com changed to protect the innocent.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Well the interesting thing is that this user has mail working for her 99% of the time....

Now that would have been an interesting piece of information up front 😉

Are you using Open Directory? If yes, check you don't have any "Potential VM growth in DirectoryService" errors in system.log.
Also, should you have networked home directories, check for connection problems during failures.

mailaccess.log (set IMAP log to "Information") and system.log will also give you more clues as to why the user's mailbox is not reachable.

Alex
