Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

for what its worth i have an HP 7550 and when SL installed it installed a new 64 bit driver - the cool thing is it wasnt just a port but a whole new UI and it works way better!
We have had issues with Canon driver support for a long time. they tend to come out with one driver for a new product and never update again. good luck trying to contact them or use their convoluted website.
Their are HP engineers on THIS forum today answering questions!

I'm totally with you. We have an ImageRunner C3380i and I get the exact same thing when trying to use UFR II (or whatever the **** its called). Enter address, but "add" button doesn't work.

This is frustrating as all ****. I seriously wouldn't have upgraded had I even thought about printer incompatibilities. Its the only color printer in the office!

Hello Mike,

I haven't seen a similar document/information for the business products. But like I said in my original post, during my testing with the 10.6 seeds, none of the Canon drivers used with the imageRUNNERs would allow you to add a printer queue. So I guess we need to wait to see what Canon does with regards to these drivers.

If the 6870 has support for PostScript (ie you were using the PS driver on 10.5), then you could use Generic Postscript or install the Canon PPDs so that you get most of the finishing options. This will give you most of the options you need, except that it does not support Job Accounting.

I just spoke with Canon tech support (Virginia, USA) and was told that the 10.19.0.0 drivers will print most Canon "late model" printers via USB, but that wireless printing (MP980 for me) will not be available for 2 to 3 weeks when the drivers and related printer software will be made 10.6 compatible. I was also told also that scanning will not work with the Canon scan software until the update is posted.

I had already spent 2 hours attempting to get wireless printing to work to no avail before the call to Canon. BTW, the hold time at Canon was about 30 minutes as of 6 PM Central time.

I have a Canon iP4600 and it wouldn't show up in my network until I finally physically hooked the printer to my computer and ran the install again. After that, I put it back on the Airport, and it showed up just fine in the printer install.

I installed Snow Leopard ... my Canon MX850 has disappeared (except for the scanner ... haven't bothered to test that because I am too busy trying to get the printer installed). I can't seem to install the printer.

Looks like I will be emailing files to print to my old iMac (which couldn't be upgraded to Snow Leopard since it doesn't have an Intel processor) in order to print from it. Thank goodness for old, working technology!

For all you Canon inkjet users in this thread asking why we need to get drivers from Canon when Snow Leopard gets them automatically, make sure you're not missing the facts that:
- an Imagerunner is a ~4 foot tall copier/scanner/networked laser printer for offices
- drivers for Imagerunners (except the CUPS for the 330 version) are NOT on the Snow Leopard list
- Canon does NOT have an update for those at this time
So, all my execs that ran out today and jumped on Snow Leopard might be sorry Monday when their laptops have issues with the enterprise printers. I'm certainly not going to upgrade my work tool (Mac) to Snow Leopard until I see reports of 'works with no problems' for the Imagerunner driver.

The Canon IPF5100 17" printer is not supported in Snow Leopard. The update appeared to install a driver but it does not print from Photoshop CS4 either from the print dialog menu or the 16bit Photoshop print plug-in available in the export menu. From the canonipfwiki I learned that updated drivers would not be available until October 9th for the Image Prograf line.

It's really frustrating that our MX700 works great over USB and the only thing stopping it from working great over Ethernet is a lack of a 10.6-compatable BJNP transport. Scanning works great over Ethernet using Bonjour.

In order to install the BJNP transport, Canon are probably going to force us to use their stupid ScanGear TWAIN drivers, bloated printer drivers and unstable IJNP network scanning drivers. They're probably going to force us to use their horrific Application software too.

I'd be happy if Canon only released a BJNP package.
I'd be ecstatic if they released a Firmware upgrade with dumped BJNP in favour of standard-compliant IP-printing like every other printer manufacturer.
