MacBook Battery Icon Shows X, menu says "no batteries installed"

Hello, I'm fixing in a client's MacBook 13" (white) 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM. It is out of warranty now. I am having the same issue. Here's what I've tried and found out so far:

- Macbook only runs on power adapter... when unplugged it shuts down immediately. Does not run on battery.
- Battery works in another MacBook just fine; 2nd MB's good battery has same issue in the broken MacBook, so I'm thinking it isn't a bad battery issue.
- Tested multiple magsafe power adapters; all react the same way... green light, no orange to signal charging. Battery indicator in top right tool bar (by clock) shows an "X" in the icon. Clicking on the menu say: "No Batteries Available"
- reset the SMC = did not fix issue
- reset the PRAM = did not fix issue
- reseated battery in case = did not fix issue
- checked magsafe adapter for debris, bent/missing pins, etc. = did not fix issue
- purchased and installed a new Battery Connector (Energy Star MacBook) = did not fix issue
- updated battery firmware to 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 = did not fix issue

Next Troubleshooting Things to Try: (please let me know if any are unnecessary)
1) place battery in refrigerator for 1 hour to "reset" it...then try replacing in MB and connect power adapter. I have seen one person say this fixed his MB battery X issue.
2) call Apple for replacement battery (not sure it will help as my good MB battery doesn't work in this MB either, and the battery from the broken MB works fine in the good MB)
3) purchase and install new MacBook DC-in board (I've done this on an iBook before), which might help the MB charge the battery... but seems like if the DC-in board was broken now, that it would not provide power at all.
4) replace logic board (ugh.. at $800+ it's best to just suggest a new MacBook for my client)

Please let me know if you think of any other ideas or have a solution suggestion to this problem. Thanks.

I've been having problems with my macbook battery these past few days. It's been acting strange. At first, the magsafe LED would turn amber then green then amber again. I thought it was just a fluctuation in my electricity line but few days later, the battery icon showed an X and macbook shows that it is not recognizing any battery. I then went to apple support and in the forum here to read on similar problems. I did the reseting of SMC. It sort of fixed the LED's amber to green changing, and the X disappeared. But now, my battery is showing 10 hours to full and it does not change. And when I disconnect it to the power source, it shuts down. Even if it already has 24% battery.

I have calibrated my battery three times for the last 2 months. And I've already checked and done everything stated in the apple support in terms of battery care and troubleshooting, i.e. pins, plug, wiring check etc. But it seems I still have a problem.

So I went to an Apple Center here in my country and the guy there plugged my macbook to their power cord. I showed him the X battery icon and how the led light is always green. He said I just have to replace my battery. A week later, I went to buy a new battery from the same Apple store. When I got home, I put it in and plugged it. At first, the led light of the power cord remained green, even after a couple of minutes. I turned on my computer and it still didn't change. The battery icon shows charging mode (lightning icon), 0%, even though the led light of the power cord is green. I unplugged the computer from the power to see if it would still work, but it shut down after a few seconds. I checked everything from the new battery, the casing, the power cord cleanliness etc. evertyhing looks ok. So I plugged it again. This time, the led light of the power cord is amber upon plugging. I turned on my computer, and it appeared to be charging. But when I checked the status of the charging, it says, 10:00 until full. Is that normal? Then now while I'm using it as I'm charging, the battery icon would switch to the plugged mode (instead of lightning-when normally charging) and my power cord led light would turn green momentarily, and then change back to amber and charging mode again (lightning icon). I don't understand what's wrong. I hope you can give me some insights as to what might be the problem. I plan to bring the laptop together with my old and new batteries down to the Apple center soon, but I'm just really scared as there might be bigger problems. Help!

I just called support about this black X in the battery indicator issue, and after repeated attempts to assure the tech person that this is an ongoing issue with other users she said she'd never heard of it and didn't see it reported anywhere. Yikes! So frustrating. I'll be heading to the apple store with all of the information I've gained from reading the posts in this forum. Thank you.

Moose Paw:

My battery will not charge in my Macbook (black) 13". My battery was tested and it works and charges in other identical Macbook 13" computers. TEKSERV in NYC diagnosed the problem and said they thought it was the DC In Board. The DC In Board was replaced and still my battery does not charge.

Moosepaw:

Did you ever end up replacing the battery connector and if so did that fix the problem?

Thanks!

I am interested to know what you learned after going the Apple Store and presenting them with these posts?

Did they mention anything about a faulty batter connector? Thanks!

Seems like seeral others are having similar problems. Has any on replaced both the DC in Board AND the battery connector and if so has this resulted in success? I really do not want to replace the logic board... just doesn't seems worth the money.

Thanks.
