Stop the built-in mic's input level from decreasing during videochat?

Hey Ralph,

Good to see you and the guys still going strong here.

Anybody had any more thoughts on this one. I too find it very annoying that everytime either party gets excited and makes a louder than normal noise, the rest of the conversation is too quiet. It's very dull having to keep turning the Mic gain up!

I'm thinking of writing a AppleScript or shell script to bodge this, but a fix would be much nicer.

PS That Resetting Echo Canceller message appears for me but doesn't coincide with the actual turn down.

I have nothing new on this.

EZ Jim and I have chatted about it.
HE has a MacBook Pro 4,4 and I have a much earlier 1,1 and neither of has the issue
It seems to be those in between and on some iMacs.

Having said,that EZ Jim and I both use external Mics

Hi,

I have this happening on my two Macs (iMac8,1 24" 3.06GHz, MacBook2,1 - 2.16GHz C2Duo) with both the inbuilt Microphone and a Logitech Sphere Webcam (Mic). Others I chat with, have the same issue...

The Input Volume only reduces in steps when in a live chat, not at any other times.

Just my two-penneth in the hope of triggering a fix.

I too have seen this skype auto adjustment. Seems like iChat has the worst of both worlds! It can only turn down, not up. Full (both way) auto, or nothing would be better than how it is now. Looks like Steve has other projects on his mind, rather than improving core Mac apps.

I had this same problem with my wife's iMac 7,1 (late 2007)

I tried all of the suggestions on this forum and even started my own thread.

I could not get it fixed.
I even wiped the hard drive clean and installed Snow Leopard with nothing else.
I did not transfer anything over hoping it might be some user preference. Nope....
Still would not work.
There seems to be something in the new iChat and Snow Leopard that has this problem with certain iMacs and MacBook (pros)...
I believe only Apple will be able to fix this.

I just bought my wife a new iMac 21.5 that is model 10,1
I migrated everything from the old iMac over and the volume now does Not go down automatically any longer.

So, the same exact system and user preferences works on the new iMac 10,1 but not the older iMac 7,1

I sold the iMac 7,1 with Leopard on it which the iChat volume works just fine....
Not the best way to fix a problem but my wife did get a new model and the iChat volume does Not have a problem....

I really didn't buy a new iMac just to solve the iChat volume problem however, the new iMac did solve the problem.

I replace my computers every 2 years so when I sell them they still have 1 year left on the AppleCare warranty. This is the first computer I have sold that had a minor glitch and if Apple does correct the problem, the new owner still has almost a year warranty left.
When selling this machine, it originally came with Leopard so that is what I installed back on it when I sold it. iChat doesn't have that volume problem with this particular iMac when running Leopard, only when running Snow Leopard.
I will be watching this forum section to see if anyone eventually comes up with a fix for these iMac models and some of the MacBook (pro) models that exhibit the same symptoms.

When I bumped it to the Hosts I pointed out you had sold a Mac to Solve the issue.

I would still encourage people to report it here

I have reported it and found out the same thing you did, the newer versions of iChat are not listed in Apple's list of iChat versions to report.
What's up with that?
iChat 5.0.1 has been out a long time now in computer years.

Yes, I would like to see a fix for this but as you know, I don't think any of us users can fix it on these particular machines.

The person I sold my computer to is a friend so a fix would be nice.
However, they can't run Snow Leopard at this time anyway because they have other 3rd party software that can not run on Snow Leopard yet.

Let's hope for a fix someday for these machines.

I have an ongoing thread with th hosts about the lack of full listing of the iChat versions.

In fact before Christmas that page had not been updated for the OS even as far as Snow Leopard (10.6) and that is even further back. (the base level iChat 5)

iChat 5.0.1 comes with OS 10.6.2 update.

I hope the "fix" comes soon.

i ended up building a shell script that i launch before a vid conf to repeatedly put the gain to the max .... bummer

It clearly states this is a User to User forum.
Apple Provide the Hosts as moderators (Purple icons where the rest of use have Avatars). ( Example post bottom of this thread to show icon))

Some Apple Employees do post (Silver icons) but do so outside of their regular job. ( Example thread to see iCon)

If you have a Shell script that works I am sure many people in this thread would like to see it and know how to use/install it.

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. When I do audio and video chat using Gmail's chat applet the same thing happens. This is beyond frustrating; it is terrible.

At this point in time we are stick with letting Apple know via http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html (even then you have to put in the free text area that you are using iChat 5.0.3 as it is not in the list)
