Stop the built-in mic's input level from decreasing during videochat?

No matter how many times my girlfriend sets her Late 2008 15" MBP's built-in mic's input level to max, the input level always decreases on its own during our videochat sessions.

Since the level decreases more when she watches loud videos during our videochat sessions, I'm thinking the input level is auto-adjusting itself to the increase in noise level or something.

I've googled and search the discussion forums to no avail.

If anyone knows how to stop this auto-adjusting thing from happening, I'm all ears.

That's the first thing we tried and it's never worked.

I've done screensharing sessions with her where I've maxed out her onboard mic input level and unchecked ambient noise reduction, but the input level would start moving left regardless the louder the sound her onboard speakers made as I spoke or played videos.

However, thank you for trying.

Hi Ralph, I think I finally figured it out. Not very obvious, but the reason why some people have this issue. It is as simple of un-checking the ambient noise reduction box, however if you do this while you are using iChat video it takes no effect, and this is the only time I've been trying find solutions - while taking with others. So uncheck, restart iChat, auto input volume doesn't move.

My girlfriend and I just tried it on her Macbook Pro and it didn't work.

Our repro steps, as I explained it to her during our video:

1. unchecked ambient noise reduction
2. asked her to quit iChat
3. she set her input level to max
4. she restarted iChat
5. I initiated the video chat session
6. with video chat up and running, she said the input level was still moving left as I spoke louder and louder (which caused her speakers to emit louder and louder sounds)

Though it didn't work for us, I do thank all of you for earnestly looking into it. We really appreciate it.

Hi,

She should open her Hard Drive and go to Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
She will have to go to this Folder manually as Spotlight does not look in there.

This is a a System Wide Preference that all Mac Users on her Computer would use if she had other Accounts set up. It is not a personal one for her (which would have been in her Home Folder/Library/Preferences)

Hi,

I have seen a couple of threads on this now.

The iChat 4 "Fix" does not seem to work.

Deleting the other .plist to do with Audio in that Audio folder in Snow Leopard also doe not help.

I have only seen it posted about internal mic on iMacs and laptops.

However I do not suffer from it myself.

I have tried changing an Audio setting and comparing the Date Modified column items to see if anything gets changed.
The SystemPreferences.plist in my Home Folder list that I opened the Sound preferences but not the settings.
None of the Audio .plists are showing any change. (in Hard Drive/Library/Preferences)

At the moment I am mystified as to where any setting is stored.

HI

We may need to look elsewhere than iChat for this fix, because I'm getting the same thing in Skype. When making a call the internal mic level moves up and down seemingly randomly. Its incredibly annoying, because there's no logical reason for the input level changes, it doesn't do it based on whats necessary....

I've unticked the Ambient Noise Reduction and restarted Skype and it continues.

Any more info on how to stop this would be great.

I am noticing (and have had this for several years), that this 'sliding' of the internal microphone level seems to be some kind of automatic gain. I observe (using Skype) that as I talk, the slider moves both to the left and to the right. As I talk softer, it moves to the right, and when I talk louder, it moves to the left. (once I quite Skype the slider does not seem to 'auto adjust'). I am not sure how iChat is effected, as I don't use it.

I agree, this is an annoyance, as I would like to set the level and forget it. (unchecking reduce ambient noise does not change behavior).

Anyone know how to stop this 'auto level' feature?
