"Select the file or folder and hit the enter key puts into a mode where you can rename it."

This caught me out a few times.. On a standard external keyboard use the "enter" on the numeric pad NOT the "return" which is part of the qwerty

Another way is to right click (control click) and select info, you can change the file name here too.

I don't know what kind of keyboard you are using but on mac keyboards you can use either return or enter for this.

You can via Automator.

If you'd like it to be a Service, launch Automator and select "Service" as the template.
- Click on the "Files & Folder" left side pane and drag "Rename Finder Items" to the right.
- If you want the original to remain untouched and a copy with a new name created choose to "Add". For me and simply renaming, I choose to not add.
- Click the 'Add Date or TIme' popup and select 'Name Single Item'
- If you only want to rename the file but not the extension, select 'Basename only' and leave it blank.
- Click 'Options' below (between Results and Description) and select 'Show this action when the workflow runs'.
- Save it.

Now when you right-click on a file, the option to rename it will appear under Services.

It may not be quicker than a slow double-click but it's possible. It;s a quick and dirty way and I may look into other methods of doing this.
