Unbelievable - New Mail sound still not working in Snow Leopard
The bug was in 10.5.x but it is still not fixed in Snow Leopard. When there is a new mail on an IMAP account there is no mail sound. Sound for incoming mails is selected (I can even hear it when I select it in the menu) and the volume of my Mac is on - but no sound.

Mac OS X (10.6)
I had the same problem. My solution was very easy: Check the sound settings in system settings. See whether the the volume is turned on at all. ONce I turned the volume on for alerts it worked fine!
Hope it helps.
In 10.6, and Mail, there are two setting for sound that must both be set. Mail Preferences/General being the obvious one, but also the Alert volume in System Preferences/Sound along with the selection to play user interface sound effects.
Thanks for your replies. I have gone through the settings and checked that the user interface sounds are on, and the mail sounds are on. These have all been working fine until about a week ago, but no longer work. I get other alert sounds on the computer, and I get the normal sound when mail is sent - just no sound when I receive new mail.
I do also notice that other apps (which produce alert sounds) become silent at the same time as Mail does. For instance I've got the same trouble with chats in Adium. Sometimes it plays sound alerts on an incoming chat and sometimes it doesn't without having changed anything! I'm really annoyed by this bug and hope that someone can figure out a solution.. 😟
One thing I'm wondering: some apps won't work properly anymore when they are placed in a subfolder within the application folder. Don't know why, but this is true for iWeb for instance. It might also be true for Mail.. so is there anyone who is experiencing this bug, while Mail is in it's original location?
Forget the 2 posts I wrote before this one.. I finally figured out what's happening here:
I've got a sound system connected to my Mac so in System Preferences I've selected Line Out for the sound output. I don't want any sound alerts going through my sound system, so I've selected the Internal Speakers for these. For both of them I set the volume to maximum. This works as it's supposed to and I got no problems so far..
But somehow after a while Line Out stays at full volume, but the sound alerts become muted! :-s
Impressed with iPods and iPhones over the last few years, and after spending some time on a friend's iMac, I take the plunge and hand over £££ for a brand new Macbook Pro. Also having an iPhone (and considering an iPad), I also sign up for Apple's own dedicated email service, MobileMe.
So, on Apple hardware, running an Apple OS, using an Apple email account, all setup and with the latest software, I am unable to hear a new email arriving; something I have been able to do on my PC for the last 20 years and my mobile for 10 years.
You can display a little red badge, how fricking hard is it to play a little chime too?!
This has left me embarrassed, annoyed and feeling a little stupid to have placed so much trust in one company. I'm new (very new) to all things Mac, but we must be able to escalate this stupid yet most annoying of issues to get this resolved. Do we even have an official Apple response?
I don't think we have an official answer from Apple staff. However leave feedback to Apple or email sjobs@mac.com because now it's time for the CEO to wake up.
