Photoshop CS4 "Could not complete your request because of a program error"

Installed Snow Leopard, started to go back to work, opened Photoshop CS4 and I get this error when creating any new, or opening any current document:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error"

Any ideas? I thought it might have been a bad font, so I validated all my fonts in font book, no errors or issues reported.

Help! I'm under deadline, I can't lose PS today!

I found that knowledge-base article and did every step in it...

I even went beyond... I deactivated CS4, completely uninstalled using AppZapper and then manually went through and tossed every adobe pref file in both users and in system.

I then reinstalled CS4 from scratch, reactivated, and exact same issue. It happens when running in both the 32, and 64 bit kernel as well.

It's so odd too... it runs fine for around 40 seconds. I can open a doc, add type, but then that annoying error pop-up comes and it gets stuck in a loop. I can only click on 'OK', which just makes the error window open again. And again, again, etc... you can't escape. The only way to quit is to 'force quit'.

A A P L, if you hate to run salt in the wound, why did you?

I installed 10.6 because it is listed as having 100% CS4 compatibility and Adobe and Apple worked together on making sure that was the case. There isn't a single thread in Adobe's forums for this issue regarding snow leopard.

And that said, I installed a new OS which killed my App, not the other way around. I'm posting in the right place. But thanks anyway, I guess?

Well, sorry, as I said, I wasn't trying to be a tool, but with a work deadline, it seems silly to do.
Since Snow was released today, I do not expect a ton of posts in Adobe's forum yet - but keep looking.
You can also utilize troubleshooting tips for previous OSes as well.
Might be fixable under routine Adobe fixes for other situations.

Good luck.

I understand... I don't think anyone else is having this issue.

I am convinced this is a font or type issue. I can open Photoshop and work for as long as I'd like, provided I do not open the Character Palette, or select the font tool.

Once I do either of those, this error cycle is created. I am trying to figure out how to turn off 2550 fonts and only leave the system fonts in place to see if this helps. But, again, this is no easy task.

I validated all of my fonts in Font Book - they call check out fine. No duplicates, no errors.

MIght want to use a tool to remove application font caches and system font caches.
Try:
FontNuke (check for compatibility as it's older)
OnyX
I also have used Lintotype Font Explorer which is now commercial, but older versions are free.

Or, you can delete some caches by booting into safe mode (hold Shift key at bootup)
Sounds like that's the issue.

Good call. That did it. The font cache was corrupt. Nice suggestion! Started in safe mode by shutting down, hitting the power button, wait for the chime, hold down 'Shift'. It started in Safe Boot. Then I restarted normally.

After that - Font Book was able to verify 6 corrupted fonts, but even before that Photoshop launched and stayed open, AND as an added benefit the type list loaded WAY faster.

Thanks!

How did you fix this problem specifically? I am running into the same problem and can't get it to stop popping up that **** error window. This is so frustrating!!!

I validated my fonts and got rid of the major error ones. Should I also trash the minor yellow flagged one?

I also got FontNuke and Nuked the caches, but I still get that error box. What else can I do?

I know this is marked as answered, but this issue is caused by corrupted font caches. I have found cocktail is an excellent app for this. It does many things to keep mac running well (i highly recommend this a maintenance app to anyone running osx), but it also can clear font caches quickly without requiring rebooting in safe mode. Check it out: http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php

in the pilot tab there is an option to clear caches on demand, however i would recommend setting this on a schedule weekly to solve this and other issues.
