Quicktime 10 won't play .avi files.

I've purchased a MacBook Pro today with the new snow leopard system, when i went to play avi files that i had watched earlier today on my home 10.5.8 imac. Quicktime 10 did not recognise the files.

I do not remember adding any components onto the Quicktime 7.6.2, that i had previously used. So i was wondering if anyone knew what the missing link was?

Thanks Rachel.

There seems to be one major bug or a missing codec in Snow Leopard when it somes to DV-Pal avi's.
I have some AVI-Files from Windows-Computers that now can't be played on my iMac with SL. I can play them on my Powerbook with Tiger.
But I also have DV-Pal-Avis than CAN be played. The only difference I noticed between them is that the playable ones were directly captured from tape and the non-playables were CREATED (in this case with various versions of Adobe Premiere).
I used "Media Info Mac" ( http://mediainfo.massanti.com) to display all properties - one difference between them is "Display aspect ratio" (playables have 5/4, non playables have 4/3).
Any ideas? Does someone have the same problem?
Could it be a bug in Snow Leopard that some parts of the DV-Pal-codec is missing?

I was recently having the same problems with .avi files and QuickTime Player 7.6.4 after some OS upgrades. I downloaded and installed Perian 1.2, and now the .avi files play like they did previously. Interesting, now even one that VLC does not play completely cleanly plays fine with QuickTime Player.

Why doesn't Apple just fix QuickTime instead of making us install Perian?

Thanks for the tip about Perian!
