Quicktime 10 won't play .avi files.

Question

Quicktime 10 won't play .avi files.

I've purchased a MacBook Pro today with the new snow leopard system, when i went to play avi files that i had watched earlier today on my home 10.5.8 imac. Quicktime 10 did not recognise the files.

I do not remember adding any components onto the Quicktime 7.6.2, that i had previously used. So i was wondering if anyone knew what the missing link was?

Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and install QuickTime Player (Optional Installs).
There are many QuickTime files and formats that will only play with QuickTime player 7.6.x

Trying to download Quicktime 7, from the optional installs doesn't seem to have an effect, it downloads successfully but, cannot be found.

Quicktime 7 installed in the Utilities folder on my Mac. Take a look there.

Likewise, I have just installed QuickTime 10 along with Snow Leopard and am unable to play AVI files.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Same thing happens to me, Quicktime 10 doesn't recognise the .avi files.

For Everyone having problems playing avi's in Quicktime 10 download and install Perian http://perian.org/ I just installed it and I am having no problems. I don't even have Quicktime 7 installed. I have tested my avi's using the preview and quicktime 10 methods

Has anyone had problems with the DIVX codec and QTX? I don't have many avi files and very few divx files. Had not had a chance to test one yet.

I have the same problem. I upgraded from Leopard. Installing (and even re-installing) Perian didn't help, still cannot view .avi files.

QuickTime X will not play AVI files.
Open them using QuickTime Player (with Perian software help).

I have some AVI files which will play and one so far that won't. However, it plays without any problem within Keynote and Powerpoint. Must be a bug in Quicktime X.

I've upgraded from OS X 10.5.7 to OS X 10.6. I have updated Perian to 1.1.4 and have QT 7.62 too.

The avi files I tried to play only have audio, and no video playback. I have checked that the video track and audio track both are running as norm but strangely, OT X does not play back any visuals.

In fact, other than .mov files which will function fully, .wmv & .flv formats I've tried will only have audio feeds.

I wonder what causes it?

Suggest you install perian and the latest snow leopard fit beta version of flip4mac(beta). This will allow you to play 99% of your contents on QT10. Would de-install RealPlayer if you have it, for you no longer need it. For any "odd" formats I keep VLC......seems to even play audio tapes from the 80's.

Just upgraded everything to SL and downloaded Perian 1.1.4 from apple.com for Quicktime X. Works great for avi files but I still use vlc for mkv files.

Better yet is the use of front row and the thumbnails 🙂
