I Installed Snow Leopard and nothing is different

I followed the directions to install the upgrade for Snow Leopard, after the install and restart, my computer is exactly the same except the background was reset to the default. The finder has not changed to any of the features advertised. I'm wondering what I did wrong. Also I have Time Capsule and I don't understand the restore instructions. When I install the upgrade, does it delete all the programs and files on the computer? or why do I need to restore the computer from the time machine? I'm very confused and need help.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6)

Actually, you do. The error message you received (when opening a WMV file, as your next post mentions) was incorrect. A third party program, Flip4Mac, gave you bad information.

Here's why: WMV files are a Microsoft format that are not supported in Quicktime until you install Flip4Mac. Flip4Mac allows them to be played in Quicktime. When Flip4Mac has problems, you have problems.

In this case, Flip4Mac does not work with Snow Leopard. Instead of telling you that, Flip4Mac claims that Quicktime is not installed, when it is.

The only DIY needed with Snow Leopard is updating 3rd party software, if those updates are available. Many developers have not released updated versions.

As of right now, Flip4Mac is not updated. You can check for new versions at the FLip4Mac website: http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm

Good luck, I hope this reply eases your mind.

RussJP,

You may be able to give me some advice though. Since my upgrade to SL I can't turn Airport Off on my MBP! Any thoughts?

Well, that certainly is a problem! And not one that is normal. Let's see what can be done.

First, make sure that you actually have authorization to turn Airport on and off. Are you using an admin account? If not, look in System Preferences>Network. Unlock the padlock and enter your admin username and password if necessary, then select your Airport "Network Port Configuration" in the list at the left. Click the "Advanced" button.

On the first tab you should see (the "Airport" tab), look at the list of options one can turn off and on. Make sure "Turn Airport off and on" is not checked in the "Require admin password to:" section.

If you are using an admin account, then you may have deeper problems. If this is the case, and even if the option described above is enabled, you still should be able to turn Airport off and on. Are you asked to enter your admin password when you attempt to do so?

Hi,

I have the same problem as RussJP, aka can't turn airport off an I run an account with admin rights.
I think this is an upgrade bug as prior upgrading to 10.6, I had the option "Require administrator password to Turn Airport off and on" checked. After upgrade, the option was no more checked.
I reinstalled SL above itself, but no more luck.
Note that when I open the terminal and type "ifconfig en1 down", the airport is disabled correctly. I can also enable it with "ifconfig en1 up".

If interested I created an apple script to automate the thing... But it is definitely not a solution I like.

<code>
set isConnected to false
try
with timeout of 15 seconds
set reply to do shell script "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/Current/Resour ces/airport -I" password "myPassword" with administrator privileges
if reply contains "state: running" then set isConnected to true
end timeout
end try

if isConnected then
do shell script "ifconfig en1 down" password "myPassword" with administrator privileges
else
do shell script "ifconfig en1 up" password "myPassword" with administrator privileges
end if
</code>

Well I guess the only consolation is that it isn't just me so I know it probably isn't a hardware issue.
I tried everything described to no avail. It's my personal MBP so I'm the admin anyway, but I tried to set it password only and without, no luck.
I suppose at least it's locked in the on position and not off, that would be worse.
Can't think of anything else to try.

Thanks for the Flip 4 Mac info. Not really sure I want to download their update just yet QuickTime was playing WMV files so I am not really seeing a need. Unless, Does it do something else? Sorry about the rant last night. Just thought I would put in SL in 15 minutes and everything would be great. Should not have started so late.Tired.
SL is amazingly fast! Loving everything else .

There is actually a beta version of Flip4Mac available right now for Snow Leopard on the Flip4Mac website: http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv-beta.asp
