Airport won't turn on in OS X v10.6

After installing Snow Leopard, I have a problem where Airport won't turn on in my iMac. Selecting "Turn Airport On" from the Airport menu bar icon doesn't work, and neither does clicking the "Turn Airport On" button in Network Preferences. Trying either just leaves airport off. My ethernet connection works fine. I'm not sure what the problem is. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a very similar problem but with a twist. If my computer goes to sleep, or if I restart, I have the exact same problem described here. I can't connect to AirPort, and even get a message "No AirPort card installed". However, if I shut down, and then start, AirPort works just fine.

I tried changing the location as described here, and thought it worked (I put my iMac to sleep and woke it up with AirPort working). However, after sleeping overnight, this morning I had the same problem again. Obviously, I can work OK if I shut down my iMac every time I stop using it, but this is annoying at the minimum. Hopefully Apple fixes this problem soon.

I have been searching for a solution for this problem over many threads and this solve my problem in a matter of seconds. Change your settings from automatic to a new one and presto! airport works like its should.
I was afraid that there was a problem with OS and I had to reinstall. Then I thought this isn't windows, it shouldn't be that difficult. Thanks for the help and a working solution!

I experienced the problem for the first time today:
First my airport Icon was blank, when I clicked it said "No Airport Card"
System profiler did not show an airport card. I tried a few of the fixes rebooted, booted from an external FW800 drive, Got "airport is off" but could not turn it on. Sys.Profiler DID now show a card.
ReBooted from internal (Both drives have 10.6.2) Sys Profiler now showed the Airport card while booted from the internal.
Tried the Network Pane, deleted "Automatic" all attempts to turn on the Airport card failed.
While surfing for solutions (on my iPhone) I looked up and my Airport icon was flashing, then solid, now it works.
I have no Idea what happened, and am hoping that this will not become a recurring issue.
What happened to 'They Just Work'?
I had Airport issues with 10.6 (but not Airport card issues) Now this, and My machine still forgets the network printer once a week.
Marvelous Machines, but this is not the Apple QC we've been used to.

I believe v10.6.2 is the problem.

I have the same problem. Reverting to 10.6.1 solved it.

Upgrading to v10.6.2 brings the problem right back.

Creating a new network location under 10.6.2 does not allow me to add an Airport entry.

A couple of days ago, Apple released a "fix-it" Airport update through Software Update. As near as I can tell it doesn't fix a thing.

More Snow Leopard "treats" ->
-> upgrading to Snow Leopard eliminated the ability of my machine to sync Address Book groups and iCal calendars with my iPod Touch (through iTunes) and my phone (through iSync)
-> 10.6.2 also rendered my very nice Brother MFC-7840W useless -- I can't scan or print with it.

WTH, Apple?
