Right click has no virus scan option

I bought my MacBookPro (second to newest generation) through UNCG's Student Laptop program, and it came with a 1 year subscription to Symantec anti-virus. In Leopard there was an option on my right-click menu to scan the selected folder. Now in Snow Leopard that option is no longer there. Anyone have any idea how to get it back?

Hello B:

Welcome to Apple discussions.

Uninstall the Symantec stuff. Norton software is notorious for causing trouble for Macs. Use the uninstaller from the Symantec site - the stuff hides all over the system like Windows software.

There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none. A/V software causes many problems and, at a minimum, wastes resources.

i was also going to originally suggest never reinstalling it as well. since it has been my experience that Norton itself causes more issues than any actual imaginary virus might cause.

but some institutions / organizations inexplicably require AV be installed regardless of platform (all my machines going to antarctica require AV for instance).

i assume as not to have a Mac become a "Typhoid Mary"... immune but able to pass along viruses received in email/whatever to the other possibly non-immune users.

for places like that i normally go with the free ClamAV. which for the most part is leaps and bounds superior to Norton or most other commercial vendors... if only because it manages to not entirely screw up your own OS while still meeting the requirement of "have AV installed".

To answer your question about the right-click menu, it's absence is probably a side affect of the new 64-bit thing. Since Snow Leopard is now 64-bit, lots of older 32-bit software that are "plug-ins" to the system have the be updated. Apple published and article about how older screensavers don't work anymore http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2913 so it's probably the same deal with older contextual menu plug-ins. If true, at this point you would have to wait until Symantec released a 64-bit version of their software for it to work again.

I was still able to scan things and update the definitions (through rosetta)... but upon logging in I got multiple messages saying that auto-protect wouldn't work. I couldn't get it to disable auto protect, so I re-installed 10.6 and it disabled it again. Now Norton is disabled and everything is peachy. I'll just check in and out to figure out when an update is available to fix it.
