So I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini which I use as a media center in my living room. So obviously I use Front Row extensively. Imagine my dismay to find out that front row is now jerky, sometimes won't respond, and in general *****. Videos play back jerky, and steppy as well while the same videos play find through Quicktime X or Quicktime 7, and iTunes full screen. What gives? Anybody else experiencing this? Any solutions?
Mac Mini,
Mac OS X (10.6),
1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
My mini has the Nvidia 9400m graphics. I don't seem to lose the graphics performance if the mini stays on but my A/V receiver is switched off. It only happens if the Mini boots without the A/V receiver on. I know when I have the issue because my screen saver stops working and just puts up a 'Quartz Composer' text box.
Looks like I'll have to look into the Geffen DVI detective option if I want to avoid this problem moving forward. I can't see leaving my A/V receiver on all the time for when the Mini boots automatically.
Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (13 Nov 09)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874 fixes ..."an issue in Front Row that could cause sluggish or slow frame rates while watching videos"
I went straight to this version with a new 27" iMac and video playback seems fine, including DVDs. However iMacMan12321 reports he/she is already using 10.6.2.
Just noticed this on the same page:
"this update addresses video playback and performance issues for iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) and iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) computers that may occur in some situations while AirPort is turned on"
Have users reporting problems tried switching Airport off? My iMac has it off. I am holding off upgrading a Macbook Pro to SL until this bug seems to be fixed.
