"Install Failed - Contact the software manufacturer."

Hi, when I try to install my newly delivered Snow Leopard disc, it runs for about 15 mins, restarts into the installer and then after a minute or two brings up a big yellow exclamation mark with " Install Failed. Mac OSx could not be installed on your computer. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
I've repaired disc permissions, and reset PRAM. I'm currently running 10.5.8 on a white Macbook.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

First, have you checked your install log (using Console)? This would give assisters key information on the reason for the failure.

Then - if it were me, I'd call Apple Support or check with a local Apple Store if there's one handy. Have the log information handy - I make printouts (for the rare times needed).

Hi,
The log confirms the message: the installer launched and began the installation but halted when it encountered problems. I am not expert in log reading so I can't give you specifics beyond that. I am "stuck" myself with "contact the software manufacturer" as the proper (and probably most direct and quickest) way to resolve the problem

Hi Arfon,

try to restart your mac with OS dvd in the drive, press/hold Option key to display boot media options, select Disc. there is also an option during the installation to check the integrity of the installer disc, dont skip that. If that passed then your disc is ok, it could be a problem with your optical drive. Just redoing the process sometimes works.

I've successfully used the disc to upgrade my other Macbook and my drive seems to be in good working order. Still can't get this one going though!

i've had the same problem. the install seems to be going fine and then i got the exclamation mark and message about the software manufacturer.

i had already backed up to time machine so i knew that it would be pretty safe to try to verify and repair on the disk utility. i did this and it told me the disk was irreparable! i've had to erase and restore from my back-up. it's doing this now and, fingers crossed, it's going ok.

my question is whether the error that caused the installation fatality was imported by the installation disk or whether it was already on my macbook, in which case i am presumably restoring a flawed disk.

does that make sense? meanwhile this experience has forced me to head off to the apple store today and finally buy a macbook pro - something i've been putting off for ages.

If this were an issue that I was having, after having done what you've done, I would rebuild the directory using Disk Warrior.

I can't tell you how many issues I've run into that just don't make sense to me, but which clear up with a DW directory rebuild. I am continually impressed.

At the very least, your subsequent troubleshooting logic will be easier to follow, but 90% of the time, this clears up an issue for me. (90% is a totally unscientific and unsubstantiated guess)

Just reviewing the installer log and noticed that your El Gato EyeTV tried to start up during the CD boot: this will stop the installer!

Try disconnecting / de-activating the EyeTY app and then try inserting your Snow Leopard install disk.
(Also - check for any apps which run in the background: even CarbonCopyCloner will be running in background if you have a backup date / time set for it to run. All such apps must be prevented from running in the background or the install process will quit as you've reported.)

Thanks for all your suggestions:

1. tried reinstalling and Leopard and then attempting SL on top - no luck
2. successfully used the disc on my other Macbook - disc seems okay
3. uninstalled Elagto - no luck again

Unfortunately, I've an old version of Discwarrior so not really suitable.....may wait until there's a further build of SL

I had some files recovered from a previous failed hard drive. They'd always been problematic in that I needed to enter my password each time I moved or changed them ( even though I had Read&Write access).
Files deleted - install worked immediately.

Thank you al for your help. Now, why did it work.....?? 🙂

So I've been dealing with this problem all weekend and haven't found a solution. I left the install friday night to install when i went to bed and the install failed the next morning. thankfully i had all my 9month olds photos backed up and safe.

I've tried:
1) doing a clean install after zeroing the drive. same error.
2) using the 10.5.4 restore disc that came with my imac - same error.
3) I made a USB drive bootable with the 10.6 files created from my 10.6 install disc - same error.

I'm assuming my HDD has failed but the most annoying part is that the drive worked perfectly with 10.5 before I tried this update...any help or suggestions?

I'm going to try the techtooldeluxe and see if that can't help.

Yes - it's interesting that "old files" would be causing problems, usually such files will just become unreadable. (Not that it matters here but on another list, someone reported that all their Pages files "went blank" after installing Snow Leopard.)

Ok so after an hour on the phone with applecare and discussions with a product specialist it appears that snow leopard disrupted the partition table. I'd tried previously to change the partitions (which worked just fine except i couldn't get anything to install),

The solution: load SL disc -> disk util. and change the partition # to 2. Install on the first or top partition. This actually allowed SL to install. after you've installed the OS, load into disc util in SL and delete the second partition and enlarge the first containing your 10.6 install.

Same sort of events for me:
SL "Family Pack" disc updated iMac in place, then updated unibody MacBook. Both went fine.

iMac was having issues with older applications, drivers, etc. and would not update to Xcode 3.2 so I decided to reinstall clean. Error after error in precisely the same spot -- the install would die when the progress bar had reached nearly the middle of the word "about" -- despite PRAM wipes, reformatting the drive and so on.

Finally, after reading this thread, I disconnected EVERYTHING except the keyboard and mouse, booted using my Leopard disc and used it to repartition the drive (first to something silly like 8 partitions and then back to 1), and then went back to the SL disc again. The install hung for a moment at the same spot (time went from 26 minutes to 30 and the Superdrive spun a bit sporadically) but then it continued to completion.

Take your pick: cleaning the DVD until it was flawless, disconnecting extraneous devices, using a different DVD to "reset" the Superdrive, rewriting the GUID partition table, or just dumb luck on the fifth try ... but it worked.

Also note that this same disc had already worked twice, including the installation of the XCode package to the Macbook, so while it could be some sort of flaw in the disc, the chances are small.

Hope everyone else can either benefit or better yet, have a flawless install. =)
