Pages Changing case? / keyboard shortcut?

Hi Pages users, I am looking to move from Word to Pages and as I write a lot I use keyboard shortcuts to use the workload.

One shortcut is to change text from uppercase to lowercase, first letter cap etc and and I can see Pages has a menu setup for this ie Format>Font>Capitalization - which offers None/All Caps/Small Caps/Title.

My quick question - is there a keyboard shortcut for this process?

I have checked through these forums and found reference to WordService from Devon but can't see how to make this work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Peter

Welcome to Apple Discussions

Download WordService from Devon Technologies, unzip (double-click) the file & then install it following the directions in the read me file. You will probably need to log out or restart your Mac for the services to be available. You will then have various options available under the Pages > Services menu. The various possibilities are dimmed in my screenshots because I have no text selected to apply the functions to.

For anyone using Snow Leopard, added services like WordService, will need to be "activated" in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.

You can also do it with System Preferences/Keyboard&Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts. From there, without any additional software, you can add shortcuts for the menu items None, All Caps, Small Caps, and Title.

Go to System Preferences/Keyboard&Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts
Click on the +
Select Pages as the application (you may have to choose other and locate it in the iWork folder)
Type in the menu item exactly as it appears in the menu, caps and spaces and all.
Select your key combination.
Click Add
Repeat for the other menu items.

I tried it for All Caps. I did not try the others but they should work too.

There are several issues here.

1. Is to ensure that in plain text the text is capitalised correctly

eg This sample demonstrates acronyms (ABC) and Formal Names.

2. Word Services can convert type that has wrongly been typed with the CAPS LOCK DOWN to:

a. lower case

b. Initial caps of sentences, and

c. Initial Caps Of Words

3. Once you have established the correct appearance of the text in the normal case, then you can use in Pages:

+Menu > Format > Font > Capitalisation > None / All Caps / Small Caps / Title+

Using the Pages' method the font stays fully editable and can be switched freely between all 4 styles, with the switch happening with Apple's ATSUI technology and the unicode in the font.

Pages does not have keyboard shortcuts for the capitilisation styles but you can easily add them using:

+System Preferences > Hardware > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts+

If you are not familiar with Services in OSX, they live under the application menu including Finder so are effectively universal.

In Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) they are better organised, appear when applicable and can be accessed via the contextual menu.

You install them into a special folder which is explained with the WordService documentation.

Other applications add services to the menu as well so that you can use them in conjunction with alternate applications.

Hi all - thanks for the very helpful and speedy replies.

I have installed WordServices and restarted so now I can see the wide range of editing options available.

However I have problems when trying to add a keyboard short cut in System Prefs/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts/Application Keyboard Shortcuts as you folks have kindly suggested ...

a) while there is an option to add the shortcut to all apps I will start with Pages but it does not appear in the list of applications drop menu - seems there every other app is there. I tried quitting Pages while setting this up but no luck.

b) it asks for the menu title ie Enter the exact name of the menu command you want to enter. I don't quite understand what that means?

cheers

First go to the menu you want to create a keyboard shortcut for and make sure it can be made visible in the background because you have to type the exact wording of the item on the menu including the Upper and lower case characters.

Go the the Keyboard shortcuts Preference click on the little plus in the bottom left corner of the window.

+Applications > Other (at bottom) > navigate to the iWork folder in the Applications folder > Pages or WordService.service (use the search field for this in the Open dialogue)+

Then type in the exact name of menu item and give it your shortcut.

Peter,
thank you for your helpful suggestions.
I have tried to add the capitalization keyboard shortcuts both to WordService and to Pages, without success. In both cases, I have proposed shift F3, the Word shortcut for changing capitalization. I have tried to match exactly the wording of the menu items, with spaces and capitalization. Do you have any suggestion for debugging, so that I can figure out what it is that I have done wrong? thank you very much.
